And it was such a lovely day at the beach. The water was cool and blue, the breeze ever so gentle. It would’ve been a picture perfect day if not for those blood-thirsty sharks circling ’round my feet.
I imagine that’s an excerpt from Blake Lively‘s diary from the upcoming thriller The Shallows. In the first trailer for the shark story from director Jaume Collet-Serra (Non Stop, Run All Night), we’re introduced to the premise of The Shallows and little else. There’s not a single word of dialogue, just nature at its most dangerous. It presents a solid premise that looks intimidating, as poor Blake Lively’s characters is so close to safety.
Since The Shallows features sharks it;ll likely draw multiple comparisons to Jaws, but that kind of comparisons sets an almost unreachable standard of excellence. Collet-Serra is a strong director capable of crafting strong tension; I’m a fan of Non-Stop and though Run All Night was merely adequate. But The Shallows could find a new form of terror with the simple fact that Lively’s character is within reach of safety.
The sharks are circling, waiting to strike when The Shallows opens in theaters on June 24th, 2016.
The official synopsis for The Shallows:
In the taut thriller The Shallows, Nancy (Blake Lively) is surfing alone on a secluded beach when she is attacked by a great white shark and stranded just a short distance from shore. Though she is only 200 yards from her survival, getting there proves the ultimate contest of wills. It’s Jaws for a new generation.
