Many modern Doctor Who fans are still aching over the loss of the Ponds and their 11th Doctor. For those who haven’t quite given up on the adventures of the Timelord and his companions from Leadworth, Random House UK has released a series of books, including Doctor Who: Touched by an Angel by Jonathan Morris.
When Mark Whittaker lost his wife Rebecca in a tragic car crash in 2003, his life slowly began to crumble into a series of empty years. When he receives a strange note in his own handwriting detailing the ways he can change the past and rescue his wife, Mark is confused but also hopeful. He is also being followed by what appears to be a giant stone angel statue. Fans of Doctor Who will immediately recognize this as the terrifying quantum-locked creature, The Weeping Angels. To feed on Mark’s potential energy, the Angel sends Mark back to the year he met the woman that would become his wife. The Doctor and the Ponds come across Mark, and end up following him in an attempt to prevent him from altering time and changing destiny.
Jonathan Morris gives the reader a great deal to think about in an otherwise quick and easy read. Is it right to go back and change the world to save one person? The book reads much like an episode of Doctor Who, but uses a great deal more flashbacks and memories to describe how Mark Whittaker and Rebecca became a couple. The book is mostly romance, with a few bits of actual action. This is a great book for those readers who enjoy the relationships since the 2005 relaunch of Doctor Who, but Classic Doctor Who fans will likely find themselves rolling their eyes at the emotional nature of this book.
Doctor Who: Touched by an Angel is a quick read and a great book to bring on a vacation. It’s not trying to be Crime and Punishment, and Jonathan Morris seems to have a fun time with his writing.
Doctor Who: Touched by an Angel is available now.
