Today in things that I guess are actually real, we’ve been gifted the first trailer for POKÉMON Detective Pikachu. The first live action film in the world of POKÉMON, Detective Pikachu stars Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom‘s Justice Smith as a young would-be detective who joins forces with the furry and adorable Pikachu (voiced by Ryan Reynolds). I’ve watched this trailer a couple of times with its colorful use of neon, The Turtles’ “Happy Together,” and jokes that seem aimed more at adults than children. I’ve been assured that this is a trailer for a movie that is totally real and not an elaborate prank.
Goosebumps director Rob Letterman helms this movie, which again is actually a real movie, that takes place in a world where people co-exist with the Pokémon. Detective Pikachu has enlisted a number of Oscar nominated actors to co-star alongside Justice Smith and the little creature voiced by Ryan Reynolds, including Ken Wantanabe and Bill Nighy, again proving this is a real movie and not something imagined in a psychedelic fever dream.
Warner Brothers and Legendary Entertainment will prove to the world that POKÉMON Detective Pikachu is entirely real when they open it in theaters nationwide May 10, 2019. Until then, you may continue to believe that POKÉMON Detective Pikachu is a figment of your imagination. Don’t say we didn’t warn you when it’s proven to be real.
The official synopsis for POKÉMON Detective Pikachu:
The story begins when ace detective Harry Goodman goes mysteriously missing, prompting his 21-year-old son Tim to find out what happened. Aiding in the investigation is Harry’s former Pokémon partner, Detective Pikachu: a hilariously wise-cracking, adorable super-sleuth who is a puzzlement even to himself. Finding that they are uniquely equipped to communicate with one another, Tim and Pikachu join forces on a thrilling adventure to unravel the tangled mystery. Chasing clues together through the neon-lit streets of Ryme City—a sprawling, modern metropolis where humans and Pokémon live side by side in a hyper-realistic live-action world—they encounter a diverse cast of Pokémon characters and uncover a shocking plot that could destroy this peaceful co-existence and threaten the whole Pokémon universe.
