When the CW announced that Vixen was going to be joining the Arrowverse on the CW Seed I was pretty excited, then I realized she was not actually joining Arrow or The Flash, but starring in her own animated series set in the same world. While I thought it was cool there would be a Vixen cartoon, I was somewhat surprised. It seemed to me that the Arrow/Flash producers didn’t feel she could hold her own in live action, or that they were submitting to the unfounded theory that female heroes can’t sustain a film or TV series. I felt it was a misstep, yet somehow still a slight move forward.
Well, it seems the producers may have felt the same way, or were using her animated series to test the waters maybe, because it was announced today on TVInsider that Megalyn Echikunwoke will be reprising her role as the heroine on the 15th episode of this season’s Arrow.
“We’re not only thrilled to be further expanding our DC television universe by bringing in the live-action incarnation of the CW Seed hit, Vixen, we’re immensely excited that Megalyn will be revisiting her role as Mari McCabe,” says Marc Guggenheim, executive producer of both shows.
Mari McCabe has already interacted with the main cast of both shows, as Stephen Amell, Grant Gustin, and Emily Bett Rickards voiced their characters in animated form, but it will be cool to see how the cast gets along in live action. This step forward is one more step the CW, and the Arrow/Flash producers, are making to create a cohesive DC universe, and hopefully this won’t be the last time we see Vixen on the network. I’m glad that someone understands how to create a cohesive DC universe on screen, even if it isn’t the Trinity or other big guns. Now, how about that Supergirl/Flash crossover.
Vixen joins Arrow on February 24th on the CW.
