Caution: Spoilers for Episode Three – What We Deserve Ahead.
The third and final episode of Telltale Game’s The Walking Dead: Michonne, What We Deserve, was released on April 26th. At first I was pretty excited for the series because 1) I enjoyed both episodes of the main Walking Dead game and 2) Michonne is all sorts of bad ass. The entirety of the series, however, has been a huge let down for me. Episode three seemed pretty rushed and was honestly way too short and I feel suffers the same problems as Minecraft Story Mode’s episode two.
What We Deserve starts off immediately after episode 2 after you either kill or spare Randall. Norma contacts Michonne stating Monroe is gone and that she has the rest of Pete’s crew and all she wants is Randall back. Everyone knows Norma is probably full of it and gets ready to attack. Once the two groups meet, Norma gives up one of Pete’s crew in exchange for he brother. After Michonne demands the rest of the crew first, Norma threatens to kill one of the crew, a bluff Michonne sees through. As the exchange is going, one of the Monroe members kills one of Pete’s crew in retaliation and everyone starts shooting each other. Michonne and Norma struggle for a bit with Norma being overcome by walkers and giving Michonne the choice of ending Norma’s misery or letting her suffer. Michonne and the rest the group retreat back into the house which is then set ablaze by molotov cocktails. As Michonne is going through the burning house looking for Sam’s brother she has more hallucinations of her daughters. Eventually the group escapes and makes their way back to Pete’s boat who suggests Michonne regroups with the survivors at the Alexandria Safe-Zone.
The entirety of the What We Deserve lasted just under one hour including boot up and credits. As was the problem with Minecraft Story Mode’s second episode, the branching story paths caused by your decision at the end of the previous episode seems to have split the entire episodes game time across both paths as opposed to creating a fully fleshed out episode for the two. Michonne’s hallucination sequence however seemed to last to long for my liking, maybe because I am comparing it to the overall length of the episode. Each of the three episodes the season seemed shorter than most of Telltale’s other series, unless cutting the episodes shorter is their way of getting episodes out sooner. I honestly feel like the series would’ve been better as a two episode season with half of episode two attached to the first and the other half attached to the last. Not only that, but episode three, at least on the PC, has severe loading issues. Certain scene changes hang on the loading screen and I even had a few hang in the middle of the cutscene itself. As it is, I do feel TWD: Michonne is still worth a play through. However, I do not feel like it is worth full price.
The Walking Dead: Michonne - Episode Three - What We Deserve
- Story - 5/105/10
- Gameplay - 8/108/10
- Mechanics - 8/108/10
The Verdict
What We Deserve’s short length seems to be caused by the branching story paths of the last episode and ultimately doesn’t make it feel worth full price.
