First Olympus fell. Then London came tumbling down. Once again, elite Secret Service Agent Mike Banning (Gerard Butler) is tasked with preventing all hell from breaking loose when the nation’s leaders are under attack by mysterious forces in the upcoming sequel Angel Has Fallen. Director Ric Roman Waugh takes over directing duties in the third entry in the Has Fallen series, which has put Mike Banning through a ringer of duplicitous allies and dangerous shootouts.
For the third film, Allan Trumbull (Morgan Freeman) has ascended to the presidency and he is guarded by the highly loyal Mike Banning. As Trumbull looks to promote Banning, an unexpected drone strike takes aim at the president, leaving Banning as the fall guy for the latest vast conspiracy that aims to violently remove the president from office. On the run as the most wanted man in America, Mike Banning must use his wits to evade capture and his fists to unravel the nefarious actors behind the conspiracy that threatens the republic.
Between Olympus and London Has Fallen, we can pretty much surmise what we can expect from Angel Has Fallen. You’re not going to get a story with a whole lot of brains, mainly perfunctory plotting that makes way for the big action sequences. Along the treacherous path to safety, Mike Banning will encounter colorful allies and mustache-twirling villains. Joining Gerard Butler and Morgan Freeman in the sequel are Jada Pinkett Smith, Lance Reddick, Tim Blake Nelson, Piper Perabo, Danny Huston, and Nick Nolte as Banning’s reclusive father. The addition of Nolte alone is enough to ramp up my interest in Angel Has Fallen.
Lionsgate will release Angel Has Fallen into theater everywhere on August 23, 2019.
