Sadly, the prayers of many cinephiles are going unanswered. The directing duo of Neveldine/Taylor are not collaborating on an upcoming motion picture. Mark Neveldine, half the duo behind the madcap Crank films, is getting ready to strike out on his own with the Catholic-themed terror of The Vatican Tapes. Horror has a time-honored of mining Catholicism for terror, reaching its pinnacle with The Exorcist, and The Vatican Tapes hopes to carry on that tradition, even if Pope Francis has recently softened the edges of the Church’s dread. Starring the reliable Michael Peña and based on a story by Fast & Furious mastermind Chris Morgan, The Vatican Tapes seems to have enough credentials in front and behind the camera that it might just be a little more than the average horror film. We’ll see if our prayers will be answered (they likely won’t) when The Vatican Tapes opens July 24th, 2015.
The official synopsis for The Vatican Tapes:
THE VATICAN TAPES follows the ultimate battle between good and evil- God versus Satan. Angela Holmes is ordinary 27-year- old until she begins to have a devastating effect on anyone close, causing serious injury and death. Holmes is examined and possession is suspected, but when the Vatican is called upon to exorcise the demon, the possession proves to be an ancient satanic force more powerful than ever imagined. It’s all up to Father Lozano (MICHAEL PEÑA) to wage war for more than just Angela’s soul, but for the world as we know it.
