Maybe this time he means it. Hollywood legend Robert Redford has teased his retirement from the silver screen before but ahead of the release of his upcoming film with writer-director David Lowery, The Old Man & the Gun, Redford has reiterated his desire to leave the limelight behind. If you’re gonna hang it up it’s hard to think of a better collaborator to send you out on a high note than David Lowery, the writer-director in the midst of a fascinating hot streak. Lowery’s recent films have varied greatly, from the heartwarming live action remake of Pete’s Dragon to the artful, contemplative meditation on time and death with A Ghost Story.
With The Old Man & the Gun, David Lowery is looking to deliver a throwback crime thriller. As a hot director right now, Lowery was able to assemble an all-star cast of Hollywood icons, old and new. Redford stars as Forrest Tucker, a septuagenarian criminal who has spent most of his life behind bars or on the lam. In the 70s and in his 70s, Tucker stages a daring escape from San Quentin and goes on series of brash heists. Hot on his trailer, though, is John Hunt (Casey Affleck), a dedicated cop ready to bring the elder criminal to justice once again. Joining the Oscar-winning duo of Redford and Affleck are other icons of the screen, including the great Sissy Spacek, Danny Glover, and Tom Waits.
Fox Searchlight is hoping to generate some serious awards buzz when The Old Man & the Gun debuts at the Toronto International Film Festival early in September. That shouldn’t be too difficult with the combination of a hot young director and iconic Hollywood legend. The Old Man & the Gun opens in select theaters on September 28, 2018 before expanding to more theaters in the following weeks. Check out the latest trailer for The Old Man & the Gun.
