Terminator Genisys – James Cameron was Right!

Tinseltown is riding the rails through Nostalgiaville and our next stop this summer is none other than the real sequel to Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Terminator Genisys. James Cameron was correct, this is the real Terminator 3. Just like Jurassic World negated The Lost World: Jurassic Park and Jurassic Park III, Terminator Genisys hits ctrl+alt+delete, rebooting the entire system making sure everyone forgets about Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines and the Christian Bale prequel, Terminator Salvation.

In recent years, this train ride has gotten boring with remakes, reboots, re-imagining or whatever other re-prefix that has been used to make what is old new again, but this refurbish (see, we did it again) was purely for the fans and 1984 never looked so good. In this go around, John Connor (Jason Clarke) is just about to shut down Skynet’s final base of operations in San Francisco, while the beta team takes on their headquarters in Colorado. Unfortunately, they are too late and Skynet has sent back a Terminator to May 12, 1984 to destroy Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke…no relation), forcing John to send Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) to save his frail, pre-warrior ways, waitress of a mother…sounds all too familiar so far, right?

Well, things don’t go as they are planned as the 1984 Reese returns to no longer the same timeline as our original story (anyone remember Chris Pine’s Star Trek? Kind of like that). Now Reese, Bad A$$ Sarah Connor, and Pops (Arnold Schwartzenegger’s aging T-800) with the help of Detective O’Brien (JK Simmons), must stop Judgment Day.

Let’s be honest, I wanted to get off the Reboot Express when Sony decided to remake The Amazing Spider-Man and everything else that came after in the sequel/prequel multiverse, however, Terminator Genisys had some great scenery that allowed me to stay on for a couple of more stops. The costuming, the setting of 1984 Los Angeles and 2017 San Francisco, even getting the right pair of Nikes from the original film and a couple of remastered scenes from Cameron’s Terminator will make you just as excited as you were when you saw the Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer.

Emilia Clarke was the perfect choice to take over the mantel from Linda Hamilton. She was able to pull off that same sense of innocence wrapped in toughness that we saw in the original two films. Jai Courtney does Michael Biehn justice as Kyle Reese and Byung-hun Lee makes a menacing T-100. I was not thrilled initially with Jason Clarke as John Connor, but he grew on me, making this an enjoyable film. Is it a bit predictable? Of course. It’s a summer blockbuster. Is it a fun stop through the scenic tour of Nostaligiaville? For a change, yes. Does Matt Smith have a terrible American accent? Absolutely.

Buy the ticket, take the ride, and come with me if you want to see Terminator Genisys.

Terminator Genisys opens nationwide, Wednesday, July 1, 2015.
