Terrance Malick isn’t a filmmaker know for being prolific. Sometimes the filmmaker takes years to complete a project, or sometimes he waits decades between movies. Lately the director has been putting films at an accelerated pace for the typically reticent filmmaker, just last year releasing Voyage of Time and Knight of Cups. Now Malick’s continued prolific streak is continuing with Song to Song, a romance set against the backdrop of the Austin music scene.
A month to the day before its opening, today brings us the first trailer for Terrance Malick’s latest artistic abstraction, which stars Ryan Gosling, Rooney Mara, Michael Fassbender, and Natalie Portman. Malick filmed Song to Song years ago with acclaimed cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, and the film has finally undergone its finishing touches ahead of its release date on March 17th, 2017.
Enjoy the dual versions of Del Shannon’s “Runaway” that comprise the trailer for Song to Song. When the film opens on March 17th, it’s likely to infuriate a certain segment of the cinephile population while tickling the fancy of the other half. It’s Terrance Malick, after all, and he wouldn’t have it any other way.
The official synopsis for Song to Song:
