The sequel to Gareth Edwards‘ 2014 Godzilla has just roared into production today. The sequel, which has been tentatively known as Godzilla: King of the Monsters, will also tie into the expanding Monsterverse, which saw an installment earlier this year with Kong: Skull Island. Krampus and Trick ‘r Treat director Michael Dougherty will helm the monster flick which will all lead towards the epic Godzilla vs. Kong which is slated for 2020 and to be directed by Adam Wingard.
Returning from the last Godzilla are Ken Wantanbe and Sally Hawkins, and they’ll be joined by Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga, Millie Bobbie Brown, Thomas Middleditch, Bradley Whitford, Charles Dance, O’Shea Jackson, Jr., Aisha Hinds, and Zhang Ziyi. Dougherty certainly has assembled a robust roster of stars to bear witness to this latest monster attack.
As for the story of Godzilla: King of the Monsters, the script will be written by Dougherty and Zack Shields.
Here’s a brief summation of the story from the press release:
The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species—thought to be mere myths—rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters is being filmed in Atlanta, Georgia with plenty of 3D and IMAX tech to capture the monster mayhem. The film is slated to be released in March 2019.
