Israeli-American filmmaker Matthew Mishory’s latest feature ‘Fioretta‘ has its West Coast Premiere at the Newport Beach Film Festival on Thursday, October 19, 2023.
Written and directed by Matthew Mishory, ‘Fioretta‘ follows history-obsessed Randy Schoenberg (played by Ryan Reynolds in ‘Woman in Gold‘) on a documentary that feels like a road-picture, with his reluctant, indifferent teenaged son, Joey.
What starts off a father trying to bond not only with his son but also lineage in a trip of a lifetime, across Europe and the centuries, turns into an unexpected romp through history that tightens the relationship between parent and child like no other!
Through rediscovering 500 years of family records, the Schoenberg discover they encounter with royalty, mystics, and what could only be described as a false messiah. They also are reminded of the long-suffering of the Jewish people and their troubled past across the European continent.
We learn that the elder Schoenberg has a knack for recovering Nazi-looted art, but recover his broken family? Only time will tell.
‘Fioretta‘ was filmed across Central Europe in Austria, Czech Republic, and Italy and Mishory takes us on an adventure out of ‘National Treasure‘ instead of your standard, slow burn documentary. Joey is at that age where his father is no longer his hero but a bother and that is no easy pill for Randy to swallow after having the notoriety that he does for all his incredible work.
‘Fioretta‘ takes the past and places it in the present reminding us that time is not linear and what seems like a bygone era can sometimes stare you right in the face when you least expecting, turning your entire world on its head.
‘Fioretta‘ shows this evening at the Newport Beach Film Festival:
The Lot 7 at 5:30 p.m.
401 Newport Center Dr.
Newport Beach, CA 92660.
Official Synopsis:
Randy Schoenberg and his 18-year-old son Joey journey through Europe and the centuries to reclaim 500 years of family history. Along the way, they encounter kings, mystics, and a false messiah, as well as the long-forgotten ordinary people who witnessed Europe’s distant and recent past: the expulsions, the Holocaust, Communism, and, most recently, the refugee crisis precipitated by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Randy is renowned for recovering Nazi-looted art, but his greatest achievement might just be reuniting the fractured and scattered shards of his own family.
