Opening this past weekend was Disney’s Big Hero 6. Inspired off the Marvel Comic of the same name, Big Hero 6 the movie will be a very unique take on the team and targeted more towards a family friendly experience rather than the action comedy thrillers Marvel blesses us with. With almost no mention of Big Hero 6 being based off a Marvel Comic, I thought people would like to get a little background on it.
Big Hero 6 In Short…
- Big Hero 6 first debuted in 3 issue mini-series in 1998 and crossed over with Alpha Flight in Alpha Flight 17.
- The team was originally lead by Silver Samurai, featured Sunfire, and lacked Fred and Wasabi No Ginger. Hiro became leader after Sunfire and Silver Samurai left the team.
- Hiro idolized/looked up to Sunfire in the comics. In the movie Hiro has an older brother he looks up to, Tadashi.
- Tadashi is not in the comic books.
- Hiro’s last name is “Takachiho” in the comic books and is “Hamada” in the film.
- In the comic books Baymax is a robot bodyguard created by Hiro the boy genius and transforms into a dragon like creature (later an armored robot) to defend him. In the movies he’s a medical robot created by Tadashi which Hiro upgrades.
- In 2008, Big Hero 6 was re-released as a five issue mini-series featuring the team line-up that would be in the film.
- The Big Hero 6 team in the film have robotic enhanced suits that grant them abilities inspired by their comic counterparts
- Fred and Wasabi have powers in the comic books, while in the movie they receive their abilities from their suits.
- Fred has a nickname in the comic books, “Fredzilla,” because he transforms into a Godzilla like creature.
- The film version varies greatly from the source material but will still likely bring you great amounts of joy.Big Hero 6 is going to divulge from the source material in a big way. However Big Hero 6 does not have a particularly deep back story. Fans of the comic will be sure to get plenty of nods and, based on Disney’s track record with animated movies, are essentially guaranteed to love this. Baymax will undoubtedly become the new lovable mascot from what will be yet another franchise Disney has spawned. Big Hero 6 opened last weekend, but if you go watch it this week at AMC and have a Stubs Card, you can receive a free limited edition Baymax Pin, or the rarer (1/10) Armored Baymax Pin.
BONUS:From issue 4 of the second release of Big Hero 6, this is where I believe the inspiration for the movie version of Baymax came from:
