Hey ‘Dahl’, Riddick’s Katee Sackhoff Q&A

GameStop, Inc.

Katee Sackoff Dahl RiddickIn the third installment of the Riddick series, Katee Sackhoff, plays the bounty huntress named, Dahl, an almost asexual predator who is more focused on the hunt than any other desire in life. Sachkoff has made a career out of wearing minimal make-up, kicking butt and becoming the latest lesbian celebrity crush.

FanboyNation (FBN): You know you’re IMDB page says your 5’10”

Katee Sackhoff (KS): chuckles. Does it really? You know people always go in there and change it. They think they are more right than the person who originally did it; because I’m 5’5”, 5’6” on a good day. 5’10” today in heels.

FBN: How do you go from playing Starbuck in Battlestar Galactica, with a lot of green screens and Frack this and Frack that to a show that is low-tech like Longmire. You went from working with Edward James Olmos to working with Lou Diamond Phillips (both were in Stand and Deliver).

KS: I would like to think they are kind of the same in that they are all about what you do in space. A confined space or a wide open space and that space is a character in the show. They do have similarities in that sense, but very, very different obviously. Westerns for just as home for me as Science Fiction.

FBN: You said that your dad showed you Aliens when you were 6 years old…

KS: Yeah and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, I’ve seen movies that I should have never seen when I saw them. I’ve seen…yeah, my dad – I think he’s phenomenal parenting laughing, but I’ve seen some doozies chuckling.

FBN: In Riddick, you play an almost asexual/lesbian bounty hunter named Dahl, who discovers her heterosexuality at the end. Do you think that would alienate your lesbian followers?

KS: No, it’s not – she doesn’t discover her heterosexuality, by no means. There is something about Riddick that makes her get in touch more with her animalistic side. At the same time, there was a line in there for the longest time that somebody says along the lines, ‘Why do you tell people, you don’t F**k guys,?’ and she says, ‘Because I don’t want the grief.’

That’s the thing about Dahl, is that I don’t think her sexuality is important. I think that she’s this kind of asexual being that potentially loves who she loves at the moment. If that alienates my lesbian following, then there is nothing I can do about it. I don’t think that it will. I think that who this character is, she is driven by passion and at the end, in this instance it’s Vin (Diesel).

FBN: You put on 15 pounds of muscle for this role. Did you have to wear lifts? I mean Dave Bautista (former WWE Superstar), is 6’5” 320, rock solid.

KS: No, I just have on, just regular military boots. He (Bautista), he leaned down for me a lot. He’s massive, the only scene where you see me next to him is where he’s leaning down, picking me up, while on my tipy-toes, holding on to him to get up closer to his head, so we are in the same shot.

FBN: You are an action heroin and everyone loves you for it. What is it about you, that has audiences believe, ‘Yes, I buy her in this role,’ because you tend to be rather ‘girlie’ when you are dolled up (pun intended) and in a skirt, that you could really beat the crap out of everybody.

KS: I don’t know. I wish that I knew what it is. With Starbuck, there was a vulnerability I had that I brought to the role, that could have been played one way, but that my vulnerability, my insecurity, just being a 22-year-old girl on set, lended to her on set allowing her to be that deep.

With other characters, I think, girls play the idea of strength, but don’t know what strength is. They go, ‘Oh, yeah, I’m strong (flexing biceps),’ and that’s not what I’m talking about. I’m talking about inner strength versus physical strength and I think that I play that internal strength. Physical strength is your body and you can get that at the gym. A lot of girls play it the opposite and I think that it ruins performances, when it comes to action. NO JUDGEMENT! There are so many that do it right…

FBN: But essentially, you’ve taken the mantle from Linda Hamilton and Sigourney Weaver as the action heroin.

KS: I hope so. What works is that your vanity has to go out the window. Your vanity has to go out the window. You can’t care if your stomach has a tiny bulge if you tighten your pants too tight. You need to play the reality of that situation. That’s something that Sigourney and Linda did, they really played the reality of these situations and were action stars second.

They are beautiful actions stars because they played the reality of the moment and were internally strong. I would love if I could continue to play these roles. If you can make an audience member, a little girl, a guy, believe that emulating you is attainable. Picturing themselves in the movie and playing fantasy, thinking about becoming an actor becomes attainable. All of a sudden they like you more, because you are giving them confidence by being normal. That’s something else that Linda and Sigourney have done.

It’s one of the things that I loved about Sigourney was that I felt like, she could be my mom. I don’t wear a lot of make-up or shape my eyebrows when I do these roles, because that’s not realistic. It makes the performance more gritty and real, people appreciate that.

Riddick opens nationwide Friday, September 6, 2013.
