Title: Green Lanterns: Rebirth #1
Writer(s): Geoff Johns and Sam Humphries
Artist(s): Ethan Van Sciver and Ed Benes
Colorist(s): Jason Wright
Publisher: DC Comics
The newest recruits are going at it. Jessica Cruz has received a Green Lantern ring after sacrificing everything in the Darkseid Wars and escaping the tortures of Power Ring. Simon Baz is still under probation and trying to be driven mad by the US government as they hope he will infiltrate the Green Lantern Corps on their behalf with the pay off is them expunging his record.
The problem is Baz doesn’t want to work with Cruz and Cruz really doesn’t want to work with Baz. Unfortunately for them, all that bickering has lead to a punishment by Hal Jordan. That punishment was fusing their power batteries together and the only way they can recharge is if they are together in order to do so.
As exciting as this story was, I am more excited that Simon Baz no longer looks Yemeni…although now he looks more Egyptian, he’s getting closer to Lebanese in his pigmentation. It’s always been a major gripe of mine to be called an “Arab” especially being from the Levant countries with a heavy non-Arab, Semitic and Hellenic influences.
Tension will build and grow between these two characters and quite possibly lead to a romantic interlude, but that’s for what the future hold. As far as this story is concerned, this is one in a long series that I am looking forward to as Johns has the Midas touch with Green Lantern and The Flash.

The Verdict
Rebuilding the Green Lantern Corps will be tough, especially if the newest recruits don’t kill each other in the process.
