What was your first Cosplay Experience?
My first cosplay experience was a group of friends of mine going to FanExpo Canada 2010. We all decided to go in cosplay and I agreed to go. I had just finished playing Assassin’s Creed II so naturally I wanted to cosplay Ezio. I looked up a lot of tutorials online to help me and even made an actual working hidden blade! I stayed up late the night before finishing it up but when I put it on for the first time, it was all worth it. Sitting on the train to get to the con was a little awkward in costume but I had a blast that day at the con and had a lot of photos taken. I think it was the best first cosplay experience anyone could have.
How long have you been Cosplaying?
I have been cosplay for around 5 years now and I am still learning. I have definitely improved over those years and try and make a cosplay that teaches me new skills and are out of my comfort zone. It’s the only way I can get better.
What is your favorite cosplay you have worn/created?
My favourite cosplay I’ve made is my Hawkgirl cosplay. I made it as part of a group called Ontario DCU and I really wanted to challenge myself and see what I could create. I designed the armor with help from my good friend and made the entire cosplay myself. The wings are made from insulation foam and are held with wire to keep the shape. The armor is craft foam. It took about a month to complete and I absolutely love how it came out.
If you had unlimited resources, what Cosplay would you create?
This is a really hard question since there are so many, but I think I would want to make a full armor cosplay. They’re just so bad ass and I think I would design it myself.
What advice would you offer others trying to break into Cosplay?
Tutorials, Tutorials and more tutorials. You can always find a tutorial for any cosplay you want to create. Just type in your character name and ‘cosplay tutorial’ into Google and you’ll find something for sure. Also, have fun with it. Cosplay is about having fun and its so awesome to go to a con and show your love for the character.
