Dead Alliance follows the most logical course of the zombie apocalypse, turning zombies into weapons against your enemies!
If you watch as many zombie related programs, play zombie related games, read zombie related things, as I do, there’s a trend. First, you’re scared and have to deal with the situation, then once you’ve adjusted. you fight back. It goes from horror and suspense to action-adventure. Dead Alliance takes place in the latter. You and your team fight in a post zombie apocalypse world to take out other factions, weaponizing zombies for your cause. At E3 I got a chance to test out the game, and it was a nice change of pace.
At E3, I got to check out 3 different game modes of Dead Alliance: Team Death Match, King of the Hill, and Capture and Hold which is a MOBA like mode with lanes and capture points. The base gameplay is exactly what you’d expect from an FPS. It’s fast paced, exciting, and fairly easy to kill and be killed. The thing that separates Dead Alliance from run in the mill FPS games are the zombies. The integration of the zombies is very natural. They’re easily disposed of and aren’t much of a threat to a seasoned warrior like the one you play. However, just as they are easily disposed of, they are easily forgotten and still pose a deadly threat. Just like in any good zombie story, zombies are a menial nuisance but deadly if you forget they are a real threat. Picture stalking an enemy for a little bit, only to be ambushed by a zombie when you least expect it! It’s a perfect blend of annoying, yet I should have known better.
The Capture and Hold mode was fun, but it did not feel completely unique. It still felt like a regular FPS mode. The concept is interesting, and objectives are a good way to change up gameplay, but Capture and Hold doesn’t feel like it changes up as much as like a Capture the Flag mode does. Don’t get me wrong, it was fun, but it wasn’t the largest contributing factor.
The zombies are the x-factor of Dead Alliance. The constant element of danger they pose is a great factor to the game. It forces players to remain extra alert. Then, you can weaponize them. You can use them to ambush enemies, guard areas, or, my favorite tactic, use them as hunting hounds. The trick is, to convert a zombie and follow it as it seeks out an enemy. Then, when it begins attacking an enemy, use the distraction to take out your foes! It’s a very rewarding feeling and makes me start to understand the deal with fox hunting.
Dead Alliance is a nice change of pace from a lot of run and gun FPS games. It’s a really unique take and implementation of zombies versus the traditional horde style we generally get them. Starting July 27th, the Multiplayer Open Beta will be available on Playstation 4, Xbox One, and Windows PC. The game is expected to launch officially on Aug. 29th from Maximum Games.
