CBS’ ‘Limitless’ Series Can Unlock the Potential of a Great Show

GameStop, Inc.

Television had a huge presence at Comic-Con this year and on Thursday CBS debuted the pilot of Limitless for attendees in Ballroom 20. The show takes place after the events of the movie, and expands on the story and the universe created by the movie. Bradley Cooper is not the star, but he does reprise his role of Eddie Mora to make an appearance in the episode, and is likely set to make key appearances and be a major presence regardless if he is on screen or not. The show focuses on a new character, Brian Sinclair played by Jake McDroman, who is nearing the end of his twenties and kind of a aimless dreamer who hasn’t achieved much. He is given an NZT pill that unlocks his mind’s potential, and he gets caught up in a murder that he needs to prove his innocence of and can only do so with more NZT. While running from the cops he is held up at gun point and let go by Officer (or Detective) Rebecca, played by Jennifer Carpenter, who he later gets to work with him. I do not want to give away too much as how and who he gets the pill from is an important piece of the episode that leads the entire conflict.

Limitless has a very strong cast with Jake McDorman and Jennifer Carpenter set to be the main characters of the show. Both are known for their dramatic roles that are able to deliver levity and humanity to every character they play. What I think really drives the show is the cinematography and editing of that displays the mental prowess of someone on NZT. The image is much warmer when portraying someone on NZT and creates a sense of rapid and increased activity, making me relive nights of over indulging on energy drinks during an all-nighter before a final.

The big concern is that the show does not bring anything new to the crime genre. There’s a straight laced cop who does the heavy lifting and paperwork while there is a genius who uses his intellect to figure it all out. Forever, Elementary, and Scorpion come to mind when thinking about shows with the same kind of premise. However the panel did ease the concern by explaining that unlike those shows, the NZT pill can be given to anyone thus meaning that many crimes committed will be committed by criminals without limitless potential. So there is a creatively different approach rather than just a genius or experienced individual deducing everything.

The pilot left the audience satisfied and hungry for more, leading them to take to Twitter to share their excitement. The biggest disappointment is that I have to wait nearly three months to catch the next episode. Watch out for Limitless premiering September 22nd 10pm/9pm central on CBS, and be sure to check back with us for more news, updates, and reviews about the show.
