Vice President of Western Region Operations of American Basketball Association and Head Coach of the Orange County Novastars, Al Smith Talks About the Revival of the ABA.
Originally, the main rival of the National Basketball Association (NBA) prior to their merger, the American Basketball Association (ABA) gave us such greats as “Dr. J” Julius Erving. It was through the ABA that dunking first came proviolent in the sport of basketball and even to the point that comedic actor and Orange County native, Will Ferrell paid tribute to the ABA with 2008’s Semi-Pro.
Now as things open up and the ABA is back, with an amazing new set of rules and the original red, white and blue basketball, the game has never been more affordable to take your family to watch live.
A 20-game season ticket package for the Novastars begins at $75.
We recently spoke with Al Smith about the revival of the ABA and his position as the Vice President of Western Region Operations of American Basketball Association and being head coach of the Orange County Novastars. We discuss the new rules, the community out reach through basketball and how Mr. Smith became apart of the ABA itself.
Mr. Smith downplays his significance in the revitalization of the ABA, but in doing so, that humility has allowed him to help elevate the league and bring eyes to the games.
For those interested in becoming apart of the league, the Novastars will be holding tryouts on Tuesday, August 10, 2021 in Irvine, CA. from 9 a.m. to Noon PT.
