The Gorgeous Ladies Of Wrestling (GLOW) helped revolutionize professional wrestling and laid the foundation for what would become sports entertainment. Featuring comedic skits, rap music and musical vignettes on top of women’s wrestling that took place in a boxing ring, these big hair beauties of the 1980s not only looked good in leotards but could kick butt doing it!
Now, 30 years later, as Netflix prepares to launch their own GLOW series, the original GLOW Girls will be honored at the Cauliflower Alley Club (CAC) by being admitted into the Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame. What is the best way to celebrate such an honor? Why taking a week long cruise on the Norwegian Dawn down the Gulf Coast, of course!
Dubbed The AfterGLOW Fan Cruise by founder Roxy Astor, one half of the tag team the Park Avenue Knockouts; Astor began doing fan events after the documentary GLOW: The Story of the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, which featured wrestlers from all four seasons reminiscing of their days on top of the sports entertainment world.
“We really do it all for the fans. Without them, we wouldn’t be here and there wouldn’t have been a GLOW and there wouldn’t be an AfterGLOW now,” said Astor during dinner aboard the cruise ship.
Joining Astor on the second annual AfterGLOW Fan Cruise were Sunny the California Girl, Debbie Dallas, Hollywood, Lightning, Gremina, Angel, Beastie the Road Warrior, MTV, Ashley Cartier and Tina Ferrari (later to be known as Ivory in the WWE), along with over a hundred of their fans celebrating their honors. The AfterGLOW Fan Cruise also featured special guest, multi-platinum recording artist from the all-girl Freestyle group Exposé, Gioia Bruno. Bruno performed two concerts that week and gave out a few massages as well.
The AfterGLOW fans were privy to an ’80s Prom, a movie night, an AfterGLOW movie where some of the ladies discussed their favorite matches and the strangest game of basketball one would have ever seen. Fans who booked early and a stateroom that had an ocean-view or higher were able to obtain an unlimited drink package offered by Norwegian Cruise Lines.
“Seeing how much fun everyone has is a constant remind that without them, there is no us. It’s something we can never forget,” said former wrestler/manager and now paranormal hunter, Gremlina.
The AfterGLOW Fan Cruise opened itself up to all walks of life. A truly judgment free zone where straight, gay, transgender all coming together to celebrate new friendships, let their hair down and enjoy spending a full week with some of their favorite professional wrestlers.
Personally, I spent a good majority of the down time hanging out in the cigar lounge, but when we hit the ports, it one was big adventure after another. I decided to hang out in Cozumel at a beach resort with Ashley and Tina, while in Belize Sunny hosted the river tubing excursion. In Honduras, Hollywood lead the charge on the catamaran and in Costa Maya, several of the GLOW Girls and fans decided to take on the dolphin encounter. From fan lead rap battles, to unlimited boozing, group dinners and one party after the next, the AfterGLOW Fan Cruise continued to sail along smoothly.
The third annual AfterGLOW Fan Cruise has already been announced as they set sail from New York City on March 4, 2018 to Port Canaveral, Great Stirrup Cay and Nassau before return to New York City on another week long booze cruise. The list of GLOW Girls attending has not been revealed yet, but Astor has been taking note of fan favorites that haven’t made their way aboard…so far.
