Elysia is an outsider in her home town. She was born with naturally blue hair. Whenever she walks down the street she gets looks of disgust and shock. The only job that she is able to land is as a custodian on the night shift, due to the way she looks. Without friends, she has made a world for herself with computer programming. Elysia is a gifted programmer, who has an innate ability to understand complex codes. In Home you get see how her talents have granted her access to a world; that others are not able to see.
Home is an independent comic book created by Todd Black. He will be starting a kickstarter for the third book in the series on June 21st. Todd’s writing is enthusiastic and to the point. He doesn’t beat around the bush with ideas and innuendos. Elysia’s history and why she has blue hair is given time in the first issue. Then in the second issue you have a stark contrast between it and the first issue. The first issue is slower in pace and really drives home the fact that her life is supposed to be miserable. Then in issue two we see how quickly she is accepted into this new world, inhabited by people with magical abilities. She has no excuse to go back to her home. Now she gets to be the person she always wanted to be. Todd Black doesn’t hold any punches with his writing, he’s very blunt in delivering ideas, and tells you how you should feel. There is no ambiguity here in Home.
Dinh Nguyen does a solid job with the art. The action scenes are easy to follow. There isn’t any miss steps in perspective. But I think the books colorist deserves a lot of credit for such a pretty book, Beth Varni. Between Varni and Nguyen you have a very pretty book. The art is the true hero in the issue. Elysia one day is able to the code in everyday real life and is able to manipulate it, outside a computer interface. Well the way its portrayed is beautifully by Varni, it elevates the book to a higher degree.
Overall its a fun book with lots of adventure. I recommend it especially for younger readers.
