‘Zootopia’ Sets Yet Another Standard for Disney Animation

GameStop, Inc.

Disney’s Zootopia is absolutely stunning. It has set a new standard for Disney, Disney-Pixar and any other animation studio that will follow this Zootopia Posterpicture from here-on-out. In a story literally about a leopard…er…bunny and fox changing their spots…fur, Zootopia follows the misadventures of Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin), a small town bunny who has big dreams of becoming the first prey to ever become a police officer in the great metropolis.

Zootopia is the animal kingdom version of New York or San Francisco, a series of districts that make up one larger city based on geographic climate where each of the various species reside. Unfortunately for Hopps, who graduated top of her class, she was relegated to the position of Meter Maid. However, that down turn did not shatter her dreams as she became the best Meter Maid in the department on the first day.

Racial overtones are high in this film as Judy comes to the aid of conman…con fox…sly fox…either way, a fox name Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman), a charming, fast talking sneak who is able to take trash, turn it into treasure and make a small fortune all while avoid paying taxes to Uncle Sam Eagle…okay, so the Muppet isn’t in the movie, but we are keeping the theme of the animal kingdom.

Hijinks ensue when an otter goes missing and we come to find out that animals who were former predators now live in harmony with those who used to be their prey are reverting to their savage ways. It is up to Judy and Nick to look beyond stereotypes and trust each other to crack the case that will save Zootopia.

Although, the animated feature is a little heavy handed in its message, which is something that often takes me out of a film, I was able to over look that and enjoy the movie for everything it had to offer. My absolute favorite characters were the sloths who ran the DMV, a testament to the brilliance of the writing team and animators.

I was a little worried though with how racially harmonious the film was intending to be when I saw the Italian stereotype animals. At first I thought they were guinea pigs, which would have been nothing more than a visual racial slur against Italians. Fortunately, I double checked to see what a guinea pig really looked like and breathed a sigh of relief to realize there were a completely different animal…although the stereotype of Italians being short slipped through the cracks.

Every child that was in our screening was completely captivated by the story, the action and the characters. Disney has yet another animated hit on their hands and Zootopia will be an instant classic come Sunday.

Zootopia opens Friday, March 4, 2016 nationwide.

Verdict

Zootopia is heavy handed in its politically correct message, but sets a new standard in Disney Animation.
