“YouTube Gaming” announced at YouTube Space LA – Live Coverage

GameStop, Inc.

At the Los Angeles location of YouTube Space, the company publicly announced the release of their new website and app, YouTube Gaming. According to Ryan Wyatt, Head of Gaming Content, “YouTube Gaming is a one-stop shop” for all gaming content with a large focus on live streaming.

YouTube Space has locations in London, Tokyo, New York, and Brazil. The Los Angeles location is the largest with 40,000 acres. The second biggest is their New York location with 20,000 acres. The venue provides YouTubers a space to film their videos and use the equipment available on site. YouTube Space provides seminars and workshops to help YouTubers improve and make the best videos possible. YouTube Space also hosts social events and the Los Angeles location will be having a Superhero-themed party on July 1.

At the live announcement, Wyatt and his team provided a live demonstration of the website and app on a desktop, tablet, and mobile device. YouTube Gaming is designed “by gamers for gamers” with a focus on a “personalized experience,” according to Wyatt. Gamers can select games to add to their “My Games” section, which will then provide notifications of the latest news, updates, videos, and other content on the title. Live streams of their favorite games are shown at the very top of the homepage and one can browse through the webpage, while still watching a small screen of the live stream at the bottom of the page. Videos of games on YouTube will be on YouTube Gaming and vice versa. Alan Joyce, the production manager, stated however,  that the search engine on YouTube Gaming will only result in game related videos. For example, searching “call” will result in plenty of Call of Duty videos, but no “Call Me Maybe” music videos.

During the press conference, Wyatt and Joyce stated that the idea started around eight months ago to mid-last year. They stated that, while the website and app will be released to the U.S. and U.K., users globally can still access the site. However, the site will only be in English. They are currently working on localizing and making it available in different languages in the near future. Unfortunately, YouTube Gaming does not allow live streaming of mobile device games yet, but they are working on it. When asked what makes YouTube Gaming unique compared to other sites, Wyatt stated, “It’s a one-stop shop.” Two unique features of YouTube Gaming are that players do not have to schedule a live stream event and can repeatedly use a single link for all their live streams.

YouTube Gaming will be at E3 next week for people to check out. If you are not attending, tune in at youtube.com/e3, go to gaming.youtube.com and follow them with @YouTubeGaming to be the first to know when YouTube Gaming is ready for you to play with.
