Mel Brooks’ beloved 1974 classic, ‘Young Frankenstein‘, has been expertly reimagined for the stage at Z Playhouse in Mission Viejo, CA. Following the tremendous success of ‘The Producers‘, this musical adaptation, co-written by Brooks and Tony Award winner Thomas Meehan, delivers a delightful blend of humor and nostalgia, perfectly timed for the Halloween season.
The story follows Frederick Frankenstein (pronounced ‘Fronk-en-steen‘, played charmingly by Tom Proprofsky), who inherits his infamous grandfather Victor Frankenstein’s estate in Transylvania. Frederick is initially reluctant to embrace his family’s dark legacy, but with the help of a quirky cast of characters—including the hilariously eccentric hunchbacked assistant Igor (‘Eye-gore’, portrayed by Charlie Massey), the enchanting lab assistant Inga (Bridget Rago), and the unforgettable Frau Blucher (Shannyn Page)—he dives headfirst into the madness of his family’s past.
The musical numbers of ‘Young Frankenstein‘ are vibrant renditions of tunes like ‘The Transylvania Mania‘, and the Irving Berlin classic ‘Puttin’ on the Ritz‘. Each song is carefully crafted to enhance the storytelling, ensuring that audiences are not only entertained but also engaged with the characters’ hilarious and heartwarming journey.
One standout moment features The Monster (Tyler Below) as he shares a poignant yet comedic monologue before breaking into the heartfelt song ‘Please Send Me Someone’ while offstage. This clever staging adds a delightful twist, showcasing the talent and creativity of the production team.
Charlie Massey shines with infectious energy, particularly during his audience interactions at intermission, which heighten the overall enjoyment. However, it’s Shannyn Page who truly steals the show with her impeccable timing and captivating performance. Her solo number ‘He Vas My Boyfriend‘ is a highlight, demonstrating her vocal prowess and stage presence, earning her well-deserved applause.
Director Julia Barbee has crafted a vibrant and engaging production, drawing out strong performances from the ensemble cast. The choreography, skillfully designed by Chloe King and Anthony Tuason, is equally impressive, seamlessly integrating dance with the story’s comedic elements and ensuring that the two-and-a-half-hour show (including intermission) flies by in a flash.
‘Young Frankenstein‘ runs from now through October 27, 2024, at the Z Playhouse.
