X-Men: Days of Future Past, (AKA Wolverine VII), is based on the 1981 Marvel comic by Chris Claremont (who has a cameo with Wolverine creator, Len Wein), John Byrne and Terry Austin. Unlike the original, where Kitty Pryde (Ellen Page) returns to her past consciousness to prevent an anti-mutant hysteria, it is Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) who makes the journey back to the 1970s to prevent the incident that is set in motion by Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence).
Like a broken record, it must be reiterated that the 3-D did not enhance the feature and as cool as it would have been to see Iceman (Shawn Ashmore) and Sunspot’s (Adan Canto) powers showcased in the medium, they weren’t. The Sentinels are impressive in design. This isn’t last decades X-Men. Days of Future Past is intense. It is the best X-Men movie thus far and will leave you extremely hopeful for Age of Apocalypse.
The fangasms came with just the presence of Warpath (Booboo Stewart), Bishop (Omar Sy), Colossus (Daniel Cudmore) and Blink (Bingbing Fan). Both Magnetos (Michael Fassbender and Ian McKellen) and Professor Xs (James McAvoy and Patrick Stewart) were great, Peter Dinklage as Dr. Bolivar Trask is flawless as always and Evan Peters’ Quicksilver steals the movie.
Wein’s wife said, “…he had a blast,” on set, while Bishop’s creator Whilce Portacio, will be seeing it sometime after opening weekend.
X-Men: Days of Future Past opens Friday, May 23, 2014 and stay for the uber geekgasm Easter egg at the end.
