This past weekend at the first (and seemingly last) Wondercon convention in Los Angeles, DC Collectables was on hand to show off some of the upcoming products for the upcoming year. The panel was moderated by Jason Inman, host of DC All Access and featured creative director Jim Fletcher, vice president Kevin Kiniry, sculptor James Marsano, DC Bombshells writer Marguerite Bennett and Harley Quinn artist Amanda Conner as they talked about inspiration and the design process that went into the making of these products. So sit back and take a gander at some upcoming goodies from DC Collectables.
First up, they started the presentation with a look at some of the statues recently released for the movie Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. Jim and James talked about how using digital scans and digital sculpting made sculpting these statues easier. With that out of the way, they moved on to the next new line of products: Suicide Squad. They talked about how much more difficult making the statues were due to how much more intricate and elaborate the costumes were and talked again about how much digital sculpting and scans helped in their creation.
As a segue from the Suicide Squad movie statues, they introduced an entirely new product line: DC Films Deluxe Action Figures. The deluxe action figure line was created in response to the creation of the DC Cinematic Universe as a means for collectors to recreate their favorite scenes from the movies. The figures themselves will range in size from approximately five to eight or nine inches and will be to scale to one another. These figures will feature more articulation than your normal action figures and will come with more accessories such as various capes (standing and flying, for example), different faces with different expressions and even flight stands. Think S.H. Figuarts, for example. They even discussed how scenery items were a possibility. They mention that they would try to make a figure for every character.
From there, they moved to the DC Bombshells line. They showed the Raven and Bumblebee statues that will be out later this year. Marguerite talked about both the statue and the comics lines and how Harley Quinn became to be in the comics because of the Christmas statue. Next they unveiled the upcoming Halloween Batgirl statue. Batgirl is designed as vampire and has a black and orange color scheme. They closed the segment with a look at a new Bombshells line which happen to be busts. These busts are based off of the Bombshells comic cover variants and will feature Wonder Woman, Supergirl, and Mera. These busts will be available around September for about $60 dollars and will be about the size of an iPhone 6 Plus. Following the DC Bombshells was a look at the newest statue in the Gotham City Garage Line: Wonder Woman.
Next up, the Harley Quinn action figure line. There were four different figures shown: all of them were design by comic artist Amanda Conner. The four that were shown off were original costume, space, Christmas, and one based off the Power Girl/Harley Quinn arc of the comic. From there, we moved on to the last segment of the panel: Batman the Animated Series.
First, they announced that the Batman, Robin and Batsignal, that were previously available with the deluxe edition Batmobile, will now be available separately. This was because of a phone call Kevin Kiniry got from comics legend, Alex Ross. They then showed a few more characters which included the Joker, Harley Quinn, Talia al Ghul and more. From there they showed a five pack of female figures which include Batgirl, Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy and Supergirl and Livewire, which will remain exclusive to this set at least until they get around to doing a Superman animated series line. Next was a Legends of the Dark Knight three pack which feature Batman, Carrie Kelly and the Mutant Leader. A Batman Beyond three pack will also be arriving which contains Terry McGinnis as Batman, Bruce Wayne and Ace the Bat-Hound. To conclude the presentation they showed a massive thirty seven inch long Batwing. The Batwing fits two figures and lights up and has retractable landing gear. All of these with the exception of the Batman Beyond three pack should be released this year with the three pack being released early next year.
That’s it for the DC Collectables Showcase at Wondercon 2016 presentation. DC showcased a wide array of collectibles and I think there’s something here for just about everyone.
