Cate Blanchett Flees in the Trailer for Richard Linklater’s ‘Where’d You Go, Bernadette’

Where'd You Go, Bernadette Trailer 2

The latest film by Richard Linklater, based on the best selling novel by Maria Semple, Where’d You Go, Bernadette is about a woman whose life has become so overwhelming that she just up and leaves without a word. The distributors of Where’d You Go, Bernadette must connect with character played by Cate Blanchett because they’ve pushed back the release date for the film a number of times already, fleeing in the night from May 2018 and relocating to October 2018 before packing up and moving to March 2019 and, finally, August 2019. In some regards this does make sense as you don’t want a quiet little dramedy from Richard Linklater buried under the bombast of superhero blockbusters, but it’s also frustrating because Richard Linklater is such a unique voice in cinema that we need his laid back empathy. Annapurna Pictures is releasing Where’d You Go, Bernadette this year and they’ve just released the second trailer for the film which is slate for release on August 16, 2019.

Bernadette (Blanchette) is a woman who had success as an architect, but her recent years have been devoted to her family, husband Elgie (Billy Crudup) and daughter Bee (Emma Nelson). The domestic life has quelled Bernadette’s creative streak, and now much of her days are spent in petty feuds with her neighbor (Kristen Wiig). Then Bernadette just leaves everything behind and goes on a journey of self-discovery. Co-starring in Linklater’s latest are James Urbaniak, Judy Greer, Troian Bellisario, Zoe Chao, and Laurence Fishburne.

It’s not hard to imagine what drew Richard Linklater to Where’d You Go, Bernadette as it seems like it was custom made for the director. Linklater has always been fascinated by characters adrift in apathetic domesticity, and the philosophical streak of trying to balance a creative life with a family life is something that’s run through much Linklater’s recent films. Richard Linklater’s ability to create intellectually stimulating work that balances drama and comedy means Where’d You Go, Bernadette will be one of my most anticipated movies of the year, and its eventually release will be a bit of catharsis for those who’ve waited for this film only to see it pushed back time and time again.

Annapurna Pictures will finally release Where’d You Go, Bernadette in theaters on August 16, 2019.

The official synopsis for Where’d You Go, Bernadette:

Based on the runaway bestseller, Where’d You Go, Bernadette is an inspiring comedy about Bernadette Fox (Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett), a loving mom who becomes compelled to reconnect with her creative passions after years of sacrificing herself for her family. Bernadette’s leap of faith takes her on an epic adventure that jump-starts her life and leads to her triumphant rediscovery.
