There is that odd comic that leave you scratching your head and wondering what the heck just happened. Enter Doodle Jump #1 from Dynamite Press. A small creature that looks like a yellow plant from Plants vs. Zombies arrives in the middle of a snowy wasteland wearing only a parka. He has no idea where he is and is quickly attacked by a group of evil penguins. Let me repeat that, EVIL PENGUINS. Step aside Gunter from Adventure Time, these derpy penguins are gathered together for the destruction of the Doodle and anyone that comes into their territory. Doodle rushes away, only to find himself trapped beneath a tree. A voice from above calls to him and demands he jumps. Making it up to the tree branch, Doodle meets an odd looking rabbit named Triple. Triple claims that Doodle is in the snowy wasteland as part of a mission to save the world. The two partner up to face the penguins.
I think if I had any concept of what a Doodle was I would have enjoyed this comic more. After all, evil penguins are right up my alley. However, I found myself from most of the comic going, um what? Meredith Gran’s story is short and easy to follow. Steve Uy’s artwork is cute and simple. The comic is clearly for a younger generation and for that it passes the test in spades. However, Doodle Jump is not a comic for those looking for the deeper meanings of life. If cute little creatures and killer penguins are your style, Doodle Jump #1 is the comic for you.
