West Coast Dockworkers Reach Tentative Deal, IDW’s Comics can Come Home (UPDATED)

You may remember that IDW‘s titles for last Wednesday were sitting on a ship off the coast of San Pedro, stuck in the waters due to a labor dispute. Well, that dispute seems to be over. Those dockworkers have reached a tentative agreement it seems, at least according to a spokesman for the Pacific Maritime Association.

“A deal has been struck. An official statement is forthcoming,” said Steve Getzug.

Though the five year contract has not been approved, the dockworkers should be returning to work tomorrow morning. The dispute between the Pacific Maritime Association and the International Longshore and Warehouse Union has been ongoing since they were unable to come to an agreement in July. The dispute affected operations at 29 different ports.

U.S. Labor Secretary Thomas Perez stated, “They’re already working, but they’ll be out in full force tomorrow, and I am confident that up and down the west coast there is an acute awareness of the need to reduce the backlog. And that is job one.”

The spice (comics) must flow. IDW just released a sigh of relief.

“Mayor Eric Garcetti released the following statement regarding the tentative port labor agreement:

“The Port of L.A. is the nation’s number one port and so I’m extremely pleased that our work to achieve a tentative agreement has been realized. I want to thank the shippers and dockworkers for heeding our call to resolve their differences so we can move our economy forward. I want to especially thank Secretary of Labor Thomas Perez for his leadership and determination to bring the parties together and to put our economy back on track. We look forward to working with all parties and the Obama Administration to make our ports the best in the world and move our economy forward.”

Mayor Garcetti has been in constant contact with all parties involved including traveling to San Francisco to meet with Secretary Thomas Perez and both sides, and he has initiated a nightly call with west coast mayors. He has also been working closely with Mayor Robert Garcia of Long Beach, whose Port of Long Beach is adjacent to the Port of Los Angeles and is important to our regional economy.

I applaud ILWU President Bob McEllrath and PMA President Jim McKenna for their fortitude in reaching this agreement. We look forward to swift ratification of the contract.
