Horror icon Wes Craven is a man mostly associated with film. His A Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream franchises have become modern classics of the horror genre, with the latter coming to our small screen as an MTV produced series. Well it looks as if that won’t be the only Craven film getting the TV treatment. Variety is reporting that Craven has inked a first-look deal with Universal Cable Productions that includes developing his 1991 film The People Under the Stairs as a series at Syfy.
“Universal Cable Productions is the home of an amazing slate of TV programming and I’m delighted to be working with them,” said Craven. “Fasten your seatbelts.”
This deal will focus on creating scripted programming for NBC Universal and Syfy, amongst others. Craven will be bringing the Daryl Gregory novel We Are All Completely Fine to the latter, in which he will write the pilot’s script, as well as direct the episode.
“Wes is an icon whose films have captivated audiences for decades. We’re thrilled to be working with him, and to be able to bring his enormous talent and unique blend of horror, humor and intelligence to television,” said UCP exec vp of development Dawn Olmstead.
Described as Downton Abby meets Amityville Horror, The People Under the Stairs focuses on a missing girl and an estate full of secrets and centuries-old horrors. We Are All Completely Fine is about an enigmatic psychologist who hosts a support group for horror scenario survivors.
Outside of this deal Craven is an executive producer on the aforementioned Scream series. This is on top of developing/producing Steve Niles’ science fiction horror comic Disciples for television as well.
Wes Craven may be most well known for film, but it looks as if that is about to change.
