‘Undateable’ Live Season 3 Premiere – Review

GameStop, Inc.

Review in Tweet “ #Undateable lacks a little in depth, but makes up for it with great zings and full commitment to the format and bits.”

NBC is notorious for cancelling television shows as of late. I personally want to blame it on their hiring practices, as I remember going to a job fair and they were only looking for candidates with near 4.0 GPA’s. Not denying I was bitter with my not good enough to put on a resume GPA, but I also firmly believe in general the best creative people do not get the best grades. Anyway back to NBC and their longest airing sitcom Undateable, now known as Undateable live.

Undateable premiered Live Friday October 9, 2015 with a two episode premiere. However due to the live format it was nearly impossible to separate it into two separate entities. It is best to think of it as a one hour premiere as to not waste time trying to find the episode break. The episode followed the shows traditional format of Danny (Chris D’Elia) messing up due to his cocky, alpha male ways and negatively affecting the life of one of the other members of the cast, usually Justin (Brent Morin), then later Danny realizes the error in his ways and fixes the situation using the same machismo. This episode Danny messes up Justin and Candace’s (Bridgit Mendler) budding and planned romance by sharing the possible downsides to dating a friend. This leads to Justin and Candace to have a will they won’t they relationship for the majority of the episode until Danny employs the chemistry test and they get together.

Chris D’Elia fully committing to being a super villain and/or super spy to make his point.

I know my summary is a bit blunt and seems harsh, but I am big fan of the show.  I will not try to fluff up the “great writing” or “huge character depth,” because there isn’t much. NBC is probably just surprised the ratings for this show hold up and will keep it going until it doesn’t. What the show lacks in depth, it more than makes up for with a great cast. Every cast member fully commits to whatever bit goes on, and even if the premise isn’t strong the cast delivers so much enthusiasm that it every bit lands.

The live format of the show is great, the pressure of a live audience seems to get the cast inspired to make the other cast members to break. It is hilarious and delivers some of the best one liners and improvised bits. The cast seems to be serious enough about the job to do the show well and also care free enough to truly enjoy the live process. A great example is Lesie’s (Bianca Kajlich) unscripted make out with TV’s Scott Foley which appeared to surprise everyone. Undateable is a refreshing change of pace from the television sitcom format. I think the best way to frame the show is like going to a recurring improve show.  It does not have a strong cohesive storyline but it does have a cast of comedic all stars that will not run out of jokes any time soon.
