Uncured’s Rex Cox Talks about Their Debut Album ‘Medusa’ and North American Tour

GameStop, Inc.

Founded in 2015 by brothers Rex and Zak Cox, Uncured released their debut album Medusa in the Spring of 2017. The New York based progressive metal band features drummer Liam Manley from Portland, Oregon, who has over 13 years experience playing drums, including five years of professional session work with various artists across the U.S. and Jon Kita from Boston, Massachusetts, who also plays with metal stalwarts Diecast and City of Homes, rounds out the Uncured line-up on bass.

This fall, Uncured will join Devildriver and Children of Bodom on a North American, we spoke with Rex and Zak Cox and here is what he had to say about the band, their debut album and their upcoming tour.

Q: You are a relatively new band on the scene, how does it feel to be on this North American tour with some heavy (pun intended) hitters?

Rex: We are honored to go out with Devildriver and the other great bands on the bill. Kurak Angrim and Lost Society during the Children of Bodom tour.

Zak: We are in San Jose tomorrow at The Ritz and we are honored to share the stage with some great bands.

Q: Your debut album is entitled Medusa, how quickly were you able to put it together in the studio before hitting the road?

Rex: We got invited to do the tour while we were in preproduction. we had less than a month and a half to get evertyhing together, from the first day of tracking to the final exports. it was a very tight schedule. Luckily, we had more time to make a video which debut today.

Q: Uncured’s sound can easily be described as melodic death metal. Who were some of your influences growing up and were you classically trained? The guitar playing is very European.

Zak: We classify ourselves as progressive, melodic death metal, because of all the clean and Jeff Lumus and Josh Patrusy. We would like to keep pushing. We started and stopped playing guitar a few times, but when our dad started playing drums with us, we were able to start enjoying guitar and what we we liked, and we write our own music. As for vocals, we have been taking classical vocal lessons for about a year now, how to breath correctly, how to stand and sing, which helps for hard vocals.

Q: The song that stuck out the most was ‘Antipsychotic.’ How did you go about creating the sound for a song with such a difficult subject matter?

Rex: We intended to have clean vocals. We had a melody line and cord progression, at the very end we threw out the melody line and justed use it as a baseline. We then added guitar layer after guitar layer. We thought it was cool to have harsh of vocals

Zak: We actually came up with the name of the song after we came up with the guitar parts. As far as the guitar part,

Q: The two of you wrote all of Medusa together. What is your collaborative process you two share? Are one of you primarily the lyricist and the other strumming out the melody on guitar or do you trade off?

Rex: Recently, I have been compiling riffs and he’s been taking the riffs to the next level. My favorite part is the composition of the song and how it lines up. Rex could tend to write more.

Zak: He’s more into writing the crazy technical riffs while I like

Q: Liam (Manley) and Jon (Kita) were well known studio musicians before joining the band. How did it come about that they joined you and Zak, rounding out the lineup? Was it instantaneous or a long process in finding the two perfect members for Uncured

Rex: We’ve both known Jon about four years now, when we got the tour we were playing the record live. We knew we needed a bassist because we didn’t want to pipe in any tracks. He is a great guy to get along with and he’s been with the band for 6 months now.

Zak: Max was on the guest on the EP, who was happy to do some work on Spontaneous Generation and be apart of all things in the process. We started looking on YouTube last June or July, who will be 100% committed. Liam was one of the first guys we found, he was playing a technical drum cover, we played a show, so after that he moved in with us full time.

Q: For those who have never been to an Uncured show, what can they expect from your stage performance that differs from other bands on these upcoming tour dates?

Rex: When they see how the melodic sections, the technical sections and how they groove. 100% of what you here is played. They’re all use playing. You can look at and determine where it’s coming from.

Zak: When someone comes to see Uncured live, we try to bring as much energy and excitement to the show. We think there is nothing more important than bring that energy at the live show. We want everyone else to have good time with the music that we are making.
