‘Tyrant’ – Bastard’s Rise to Power

GameStop, Inc.

In the Gospel According to St. Matthew 7:26-27, Jesus said, “But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.” (NKJV)

This week’s episode, A House Built on Sand, Jamal (Ashraf Barhom) learns he has a bastard son, the rightful heir to the thrown, Rami Said (Keon Alexander), the elder and now legitimized brother of Ahmed (Cameron Gharaee). Now as Ihab Rashid (Alexander Karim) along with Samira (Mor Polaneur) try to escape Abbudin are captured by what are presumed to be the ruling class, only to be taken to Syria by his old college friend Abu Omar (Darius Homayoun), a powerful warlord who wishes to help overthrow the Al-Fayeed dynasty in the most barbaric of ways.

Bassam/Barry/Khalid…whatever his name is now (Adam Rayner) is living along the Bedouin tribes after putting his eye on the chieftain’s second wife, Daliyah Al-Yazbek (Melia Kreiling). Daliyah was granted a scholarship to study in Germany in order to bring solar technology to help the struggling village.  As his forgotten son, Sammy (Noah Silver) must return to Abbudin to face a tribunal in order to receive his inheritance, which would ensure his death. If not because of who is father is, than surely because of his homosexuality.

For those who are familiar with 20th Century Middle Eastern History, the struggles of Abbudin are a mix primarily of the nations of Syria, Iraq, and Jordan. Jamal is a loose interpretation of Uday Hussein. A man who was said to be a harsh, cruel man that rode the line of insanity. As for Bassam, he is the younger, more methodical and callas Qusay Hussein. Of the two siblings, the one Iraqi  people feared more was Qusay. Bassam will be the real villain of the series as the only way Jamal will be able to finally redeem himself will be through his death.

The problem that will now occur will be the sibling rivalry that will arise between Ahmed and Rami as well as the complications between the bloody rivalry between the Al-Fayeed’s and the Said factions. My theories on these topics and who Ahmed really is will be addressed in a later “Samo Says” column about Tyrant, the more in depth profiles on the rulers of the region that influenced the series.

Tyrant airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m on FX and can be found on the FXNOW app.
