We chatted with Brandon Perea who plays Boone in ‘Twisters‘ and recreated a scene from the film using Universal’s Virtual Production Stage.
During a recent visit to Universal Studios, Hollywood, I had the unique opportunity to immerse myself in the state-of-the-art sound stage that showcases the pinnacle of modern production. This visit was part of the media coverage for the home release of the highly anticipated film ‘Twisters‘. The experience was highlighted by a hands-on recreation of a scene from the film, where I replaced Glen Powell in the driver’s seat of a Ram 1500, quad cab, and conducted an engaging interview with Brandon Perea, who plays Boone in the movie.
The sound stage at Universal Studios, Hollywood is designed with precision and versatility. Spanning 3,500 square feet, the stage floor measures 68 feet by 52 feet, providing ample room for complex set designs and dynamic performances. With a height of 14 feet 10 inches to the grid, it accommodates intricate rigging and elaborate lighting setups. The stage door, with dimensions of 9 feet 9 inches in height and 7 feet 6 inches in width, allows easy access for equipment and large set pieces.
The visit provided a memorable highlight as I took on the role of Glen Powell’s character, Tyler in a recreated scene from ‘Twisters‘. Seated behind the wheel of a Ram 1500, quad cab, the experience brought the action of the film to life as you will see immediately following the interview with Brandon Perea, shown above. Perea shared intriguing insights about his role and the film’s production, enriching the overall experience.
Equipped with cutting-edge LED technology, the stage enhances visual storytelling through various displays. The 3-degree curved LED wall measures 28 feet 8 inches by 11 feet 6 inches, ideal for expansive backgrounds. Two LED floor rolling walls, each 9 feet 10 inches by 8 feet 3 inches, offer flexibility for floor scenes. The fixed LED static ceiling display of 17 feet 8 inches by 23 feet 7 inches is perfect for overhead shots, while the motorized LED ceiling screen, measuring 7 feet 10 inches by 19 feet 8 inches, provides dynamic movement for interactive environments.
The facility is built for both comfort and functionality, featuring temperature control to maintain an optimal environment for talent and equipment, advanced soundproofing for high-quality audio capture, and high-speed WiFi throughout the space. Well-equipped dressing rooms support talent preparation, and the HMU suite offers a dedicated area for hair, makeup, and wardrobe needs. Enhanced security measures ensure the protection of production assets.
For projects requiring advanced virtual technology, the stage is outfitted with top-tier equipment. This includes a 4K video router and multiviewer for precise video routing and monitoring, 4K video capture and replay capabilities, and HD wireless video camera monitoring for flexibility. The ARRI Alexa Mini 4K camera, equipped with UMC-4 and Wireless Hi-5 Lens Controller, ensures superior image quality. The J.L. Fisher Model 10 camera dolly provides smooth camera movement, while the Canon Cinema Prime Lens package offers a range of high-quality lenses. The ETC Ion lighting console and CINEO lighting LED package, featuring Reflex R15, LB800, Quantum II, Quantum Studio, and Cineo Lightblades, provide versatile lighting solutions.
