Fueled by the Tears of Film Critics, Paramount Planning Interconnected Universe of ‘Tranfomers’ Movies

The notion that the Transformers were more than meets the eye was deemed irrelevant by the four movies helmed by Michael Bay. With its not-so-subtle sexism, racism, and otherwise non-stop incoherence, each successive film is exactly what you would expect – painful. But quality never stopped a Transformers movie from making money. To this day, the four Transformers movies have pulled in a whopping $3.7 billion dollars worldwide. So, naturally, Paramount wants to keep churning out Transformers movies.

But we’re in a Post-Avengers world and practically every potential movie series has to be this expansive collection of interconnecting films, never mind if there’s any reason that actually should interconnect or exist, for that matter. Today Deadline Hollywood is reporting that Paramount is in negotiations with Akiva Goldsman to shepherd the franchise to meet today’s demands for interconnecting stories and what have you. From the Deadline report:

[…] the studio is negotiating with Akiva Goldsman to work with franchise director Michael Bay, exec producer Steven Spielberg and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura to organize a “writer’s room” that will incubate ideas for a potential multi-part Transformers sequel, and come up with potential spinoff films based on the billion-dollar franchise culled from the Hasbro toy line.

According the speculation within the Deadline report, Goldsman won’t be actually hired to write any of these films, but act more as the puppet master overseeing the direction of this burgeoning universe.

What does this mean for the future of Transformers? Well, it’s bleak. Already a franchise overflowing with idiocy and questionable decisions of all kinds, bringing in Goldsman, a hack but an Oscar-winning hack, only means that the true victim here is coherency, who has already taken a vicious beating over the first four Transformers films. I assume this means that Bay has moved on from the Transformers, though, who knows, maybe some other ride at Universal Studios will inspire him to return.

For fans of Transformers movies, this might be good news. I don’t know. Are there that many fans of the Transformers movies? I thought people went to them hoping that this one would get it right. You’d think after four punishingly bad movies that people would abandon hope. But remember this, Transformers will be overseen by the guy who wrote Batman Forever and Batman & Robin, and those movies didn’t kill a popular and successful franchise, right?
