Defeat the Demon King Chibi-Style in Tome of the Sun

Tome of the Sun is now out in Western markets for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, and Google Play for Android devices. NetEase, Inc. brings to the mobile gaming world an action MMO experience with an anime-influenced art style, chibi. Players can customize their chibi characters while also collecting battle pets for support in combat and utilize touch controls to maneuver their way through action-packed dungeons.tome of the sun

Story

The Tome of the Sun was the only thing that kept the Shadow World from taking over, but now it is lost. As the main character, it is our job to search for the Tome of the Sun and restore harmony to the Sun Kingdom. Tome of the Sun has a basic storyline found in most RPG games. There’s an evil hovering over the world and someone has to step up to be the hero. The story does provide some twists, which I won’t reveal, to be unique and make you question who the true evil is.

Gameplay

The game features leveling, full crafting, equipment upgrades, single and co-op game modes, duels, arenas, and clan wars. In other words, there are plenty of activities to do on Tome of the Sun. The controls are set up pretty well for an RPG mobile game. It’s easy to move around and the “semi” and “auto” attack modes help prevent the thumb cramps. While most mobile RPG games require you to tap repeatedly to attack an enemy, the auto feature will automatically attack nearby enemies, with both normal attacks and the player’s special skills. All the player has to do is move around to avoid damage. As you can guess in semi, the character is attacking automatically but the player controls when to use the skills and who to attack. I really enjoy the semi and auto attack modes because it lets me go on cruise control when fighting large groups of weaker enemies, but let me take control when fighting a boss. Some might call it being lazy, I call it playing smart.

Mechanics

Tome of the Sun has a unique chibi art style to distinguish itself from other games like Final Fantasy and The Elder Scrolls. The game chooses to go the cute route and it paid off. It’s entertaining to see child-like characters wield weapons bigger than their own bodies. My main gripe is that the game still needs improvement with its touch capabilities. The game will lag when I swipe for an attack or double tap to dodge. I will admit that part of this might be my phone and if it isn’t, it is a problem the company will most likely fix with future updates.

Tome of the Sun – The Verdict

Tome of the Sun is a great mobile adaptation of action RPG games. The story provides some twists to deviate from a basic storyline, the gameplay is perfect for mobile devices, and the chibi-style art is a nice change visually from other RPG games.

Download Tome of the Sun now for iOS and Google Play.
