‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: Out of the Shadows’ Trailer Just Released

GameStop, Inc.

Instead of going to be at a respectable hour, I was scrolling through my feed and saw that the new trailer for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 just released. The best part about movie trailers is that everyone gets to be a critic, and I’ll go ahead and do that after you watch it:

Now to share my opinion… This looks great! I’m thoroughly excited. I personally found the first movie enjoyable. It was like watching a special episode of my favorite cartoon. I don’t know if any of you are old enough to remember the prime time special The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers did to introduce the Thunder Zords, but I treat pretty much any remake of an 80s television show into a Michael Bay movie with that same regards. It’s a big spectacle, there’s no great depth, but there are loveable and memorable characters that are fun to watch. However that does not mean to treat the audience like idiots (Transformers 2, 3, 4), and if you pay attention there was some real thought and respect paid to the source material. Also the perfect song was used to encapsulate the entire trailer.

First off Baxter Stocktman (Tyler Perry) is black, which is his original race in the comics. Secondly, Bebop (Gary Anthony Williams) and Rocksteady (Stephen Farrelly)! Those two have been gone for 20 plus years! They have not been seen since Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles the Next Mutation became the franchise show (that almost ended the franchise due to horrible scheduling and advertising).  Thirdly, Casey Jones (Stephen Amell)!!! Now let me explain why this is all perfect.

  1. Tyler Perry as Baxter Stockman not only pays tribute to the source material, but is good PR for diversity. Sure he’s a bad guy, but he’s a genius scientist who is able to modify the DNA of humans to have animals’ physical abilities and instincts. Then there are also mousers, a plasma fist gun, alienate forms… Stockman is a staple of the franchise, and having an accomplished actor, director, and producer play him adds some prestige and builds interests in his part in this TMNT movie universe.
  2. Bebop and Rockstedy were iconic fumbling henchmen that added some danger, but a lot of levity to the original 80s cartoon series. In their current IDW run, they are truly a force to be reckoned with, and also provide a bit more brash humor. The part that really impresses me about their inclusion in the trailer, is the use of their animal mutate forms to do real damage. Just watch Rocksteady rhino charge through those rows of cars and see how hyped you get.
  3. Goongala!!! The hockey mask wearing partner of the turtles is here, and played by Green Arrow himself. Why that is perfect casting, Stephen Amell is well versed with a hockey stick as he played the sport back in his home country of Canada (don’t hold his country of birth against him). Second, he is an avid practioner and exhibitor of parkour. We will not only get to see Casey Jones as the muscle he normally is, but also as the most agile and versatile version to be depicted on screen so far.

There are quite a few more things to be excited about besides the character additions and castings. Meghan Fox looks like she will use her assetts to draw in the crowd, Will Arnett is set to throw in some more comedic relief, and the Turtle Van! I can’t wait to watch this movie and relieve the nostalgic feeling of waking up on a Saturday morning to watch my favorite cartoon show.

***Writer’s note: I personally blame Fox and their idiotic programming and advertising for the cancellation of Next Mutation and TMNT, as well as the death of Saturday Morning Cartoons.
