Titans Ep. 11 Batman Vs. Dick Grayson

GameStop, Inc.

The season finale of Titans, simply titled Dick Grayson, leaves us wanting season two to arrive early as our Christmas gift. The series, which has the tone of The Outsiders in the comics is absolutely entertaining and even though dark in tone, is everything we wanted from the DCEU. However, as I have previously stated, DC Entertainment is far better suited for episodic television and Titans proved my earlier statement.

This week starts us off with a Beach Boys melody as Dick Grayson (Brenton Thwaites) lives a simple life in California with a family, chasing his son around as his wife, Dove (Minka Kelly) is pregnant with their second child. While Raven (Teagan Croft) and Gar (Ryan Potter) are away at college in Chicago and look to visit them over the holidays.

Dick Grayson (Brenton Thwaites) tries talking some sense into Batman

Jason Todd (Curran Walters) rolls up in his wheelchair, five years since they last visited claiming that Batman is in trouble. Jason’s injury has come from being shot by the Riddler on a heist that went wrong. Now with the death of Alfred and Commissioner Gordon having been murdered by The Joker, Batman intends to kill his ultimate arch-enemy. It is up to Dick to go back to Gotham and convince Batman not to kill him.

As the story unfolds there are some strange flashes that seem to be shaping their reality, indicating that some darker forces may be at work. The assumption is Trigon (Seamus Dever) as he was revealed in last week’s episode.

Gotham has gone to seventh level of Hell, making Detroit and Chicago look like the suburbs. It is up to Dick to talk some sense into Batman, but we all know that sometimes, Bats like to talk more with his fists than anything else.

Gotham PD enters the Bat Cave.

This episode of Titans reminded me a lot of Over the Edge from The New Batman Adventures animated series in the late-90s where Batman has become a fugitive and was targeted by Commissioner Gordon for the death of Barbara Gordon aka Batgirl. The big reveal (SPOILER ALERT) in that episode was that Batman was hit with Scarecrow’s fear gas, which manifested his worst nightmares. In Dick Grayson, his worst nightmare is this confrontation with Batman and that little bit of a reminder of the animated series was enough to make me smile.

For those linking everything back to the comics, I always treat the movies and television series as a random Earth from the multiverse, so it doesn’t connect directly to Earth-1 or Earth-2 and keeps me from fanboy raging.

Titans airs Fridays on the DC Universe App.

  • Overall Score

The only thing that kept Titans from being a 5 Star episode was that there were too many indications dark magic was involved. Beyond that, like the rest of season one, everything else was extremely entertaining and want continues to grow my affection for Titans, whether in the comics or on the DC Universe App.
