TinyCo’s Marvel Avengers Academy

When someone mentions LA charm… where does it come from? Is it the traffic? Is it the blaring of police sirens going by? Or could it be the guy who crosses into a busy intersection just to clean your windows? No… because if you’re at all familiar with the city, you know the real magic stems from LA’s nightlife. Yes, from going out clubbing, to social events, or even just going out clubbing; with such an extensive list of nighttime clubbing activities, you’ll have no choice but to be part of LA’s club scene. So how do you drag two wall flowers away from their game controllers and convince ‘em to the schlep their way through two hours of LA traffic full knowing their going straight to nerd kryptonite?

… also, the launch party for the TinyCo’s Avengers Academy of course! Fellow FanboyNation writer Michael Sarratt and I were lucky enough to be asked to attend the event at the Teragram; we got the inside news and a sneak peek of TinyCo’s new mobile freemium game. The night was awesome; TinyCo really knows how to throw a launch party! Aside from the marvel playground, live DJ, cosplayers, and Mike’s drunk ass,

stations were set up with the developers of the game on standby to help display and demonstrate to the crowd their fresh take on the characters we’ve come to know and love. Although, when you hear “fresh take”, you know that means yet another alternate universe…

To hell with origin stories, it’s back to school for the Avengers!

Visually, the game is fantastic for a mobile game. You’ll navigate your way around a fully animated 3D school grounds and venture beyond the walls into the disruption of time and space that has surrounded the Academy. You’ll start as a young Tony Stark; then point and click your way around to build and improve existing buildings, meet and befriend the other students, and eventually train & recruit them into your crew. By completing tasks and objectives that build up in your chosen character’s personal queue, you will gain XP, increase that particular character’s level, and advance their unique storyline, as well as progress the main storyline. New features, costumes, skills, and areas will slowly start to unlock while you unravel the twisted mystery of the Academy.

Avengers Academy 2 will have you solving the mystery of how to pay off all your student loans...

However, as an Avengers Academy graduate you’ll have to solve the mystery of paying off all your student loans

Though there were many developers eager and ready for questions, we were able to get our interview from the art director himself, David Nakayama. Here’s some cool stuff he wanted fans to know.

Us: What would you say makes your game different from past marvel games?

David: We were lucky enough to get the chance to re-imagine the characters, which everyone knows and loves, as college age students. We watch them grow from kind of a blank slate and form relationships with all these other great Marvel characters. What’s unique is we see good guys & bad guys working together because they aren’t necessarily enemies yet, they’re just personalities.

Us: Since the game is free to play, will it cost the user money to finish the storyline?

David: We wanted to create a game that’s fun for everyone, we want our players to be engrossed in the story and keep coming back our game, and you can play through the main storyline without a money wall holding you back. When you decide that you want more, like the extra costumes, the extra characters , or the infinity shards that help speed up build times and quest times, that’s where the Freemium gaming begins.

Us: What kind of rewards can we expect from end game material? What’s left when you finish all your storylines?

David: As you complete those stories, more and more content is unlocked, and the addition of another character means a whole new story that’s melded into the plot. We have so much already planned to release in the next year, ranging from small events that are sprinkled in between what’s going on and whole other large event to follow up the storyline already available.

Us: Are there any plans to include combat or a multiplayer function?

David: Yes and no. Primarily at its core, Avengers Academy is a builder/management, resource gathering, Sims type of game, and we want to keep it that way for the foreseeable future. Although some missions involve training for your character, the combat mostly takes place through cut scenes. As for multiplayer, there are no plans for battling or visiting other campuses, however there will be an option to send and connect with your friends on Facebook and other social platforms.

Us: Will the game be limited to the characters that are in the avengers and the main stream movies?

David: We can’t say a lot about the surprises we have planned for the year, but I feel safe saying that we have over 150 character model concepts already approved for our ever increasing roster. Our big sell is that there will always be characters to collect and with each one comes a unique ability or skill and branching personal story. They’re like Pokemon, you gotta collect ‘em all! If you like the Avengers and you like Marvel, we’ve got a great character for you to collect!

Avengers Academy mobile game is available for the ios and android operating systems. Check out the trailer below, then download it for free on their respective store fronts, and always remember the importance of higher education.
