This Week In Crowdfunding – Pandamonium, I Say Holmes! Card Game, Skidmarks

GameStop, Inc.

I’m sure, in your internet wanderings, that you’ve checked out Kickstarter and IndieGoGo, or at least heard about them by now. You’ve probably backed at least one campaign. Every week thousands of new projects are launched through these websites, and many creators have found that this is a great way to bypass the regular publication/distribution model, to get their projects directly into the hands of their fans.

It really is a bold new era, where creators come to you directly with their wares, and properties sink or swim based on the whims of the fans instead of editorial edicts and profit margins.

But seriously, crowd funding has been a game changer in its few years as a viable publication model, allowing many projects that wouldn’t necessarily have seen the light of day come to life because of fans like you. In a lot of ways it has become THE new distribution system, getting unique product directly into the hands of the consumer. Now, there are so many different campaigns being launched on a weekly basis, with a little something for everybody. But where do you start?

Let us be your guide to the thrilling world of crowd funded comics, art books, film, and associated geek and sundry. Each week we’ll scour the aforementioned websites, and profile those projects that we feel are worthy of your Paypal fees. Those projects that are offering something different than what you get at your local comic shop. Projects that defy classification, ones with interesting backer rewards, books that you might love, but would otherwise probably not happen without your support. Plus, you get cool stuff!

PandaWe start this week with Pandamonium by Patrick Scullin.

This campaign was brought to my attention by my editor due to its family friendly nature. Do you or your kids like to read? Wouldn’t you want to read a book about a swashbuckling steampunk bear? Well, your prayers have been answered.

“Welcome friends, you’re about to Kickstart Pandamonium, the Steampunk Panda Adventure book the world has been waiting for by creator Patrick Scullin.”

2ac5ad4884d3b70ec67abe08a25f8a90_largePandamonium, Death of a King, Book I is an illustrated novel set in a world of bears and not men. In an age of flint, steam and steel the grizzly bear kingdom battles for domination against the rampaging polar bears. In the midst of their struggle Robin the pirate, captain of an airship, steals from the rich and gives back to the poor. She is a one of a kind bear with fur bearing patches of both black and white. More than just a clever rogue Robin uncovers a powerful truth about her heritage that leads her down the path of destiny.”

This fun adventure novel is already finished, and you can download a free copy of it here. Patrick obviously believes in his novel, and after reading it I do to. It would be wonderful as a hardcover with full-color wrap around dust jacket illustration and 20 new engraving style interior illustrations, and that’s what he’s looking to produce. And what illustrations they are! Patrick is an accomplished artist, and the preview drawings look gorgeous!

With three other successful campaigns under his belt, not to mention the book being already written, there really isn’t anything to lose. And there are some fantastic pledge rewards as well. There are digital and signed print copies of the book, sketch cards, signed prints, an original 11 x 17 charcoal drawing, an original watercolor painting, and even an original 16 x 20 oil painting!

There aren’t enough Panda-centric steampunk adventures for the whole family, so let’s make this one happen!

SHThe game is afoot, with I Say, Holmes! The Case Solving Card Game.

Sherlock Holmes is all the rage right now. Over the last few years there have been two high profile feature films, a series on the BBC starring a certain Cumberbatch fellow, and an American series with a gender swapped Watson, and all of them have been huge success stories. Well, now’s your chance to be the super sleuth!

“The Game is Afoot and it’s up to you to solve the case! Sherlock Holmes and his cadre of clue-seeking companions are at your disposal as you attempt to catch some of the most notorious villains of Victorian era London in Victory Point GamesI Say, Holmes! You’ll have a variety of different cards at your disposal, including Arrest, Clue, Alibi, and the I Say? cards, which call on Holmes and his friends to help discover the whereabouts of the criminal elements.”

418a857318b4329079f2b0c5ceed8d81_large“This new version of I Say, Holmes! features completely new custom art created by Clark Miller (Darkest Night, Trieste) showcased on 125 playing cards, alongside custom-shaped, laser-cut counters; we’ve brought all of our expertise to bear on making I Say, Holmes! into one of our most stunningly beautiful games yet.”

This is a super cool cosmetic update of the popular card game, and it looks nice! With updated game mechanics and a new campaign, this is a great party game for 3-8 players, and most campaigns take under 30 minutes, even for those new to the game.

The pledge rewards involve Kickstarter exclusive copies of the game itself, plus copies of another game called Trieste, Tenka – Shogun Edition, and a Kickstarter exclusive edition in a custom wood burned box. You can even have a villain in the game who looks like you! They’ve unlocked the expansion stretch goal, but there’s still another goal to be met, so get pledging!

SMOur last stop today is Skidmarks, created by Adventure Time’s Derek Hunter.

Do you love Adventure Time? Do you find its surreal nature entertaining? Do you like comics filled with insane people doing insane things? Then you need Skidmarks.

“I’m Derek Hunter, one of the designers for Adventure Time on Cartoon Network! I have been drawing comics for almost as long as I can remember and what I’m asking from you today is to help me collect my favorite self-published mini comics of the last 11 years into one beautiful book!

f4d7f0aeb6e496495b53b81971ae2635_largeThe various stories in this book are a lot of fun, with a little something for everybody. There are elementary school anarchists working their way up the playground food chain.  Or how about Lobster Ladd, the son of a sushi chef on the hunt for giant sea creatures? What about a story focusing on a boy who climbs into the head of a subterranean monster to drive him around looking for buried treasure? There’s all of that and more!

He is only asking for six thousand dollars to cover printing and distribution, and your pledge gets you a copy of the book in print or digital editions. But wait! There’s more! You can get a signed print edition with a “Reading is for sissies” bookmark and head sketch, 5×7 art prints and sketches, original pages from the book itself, or original 8.5×11 commissions in black & white or color!

This really is a fantastic book. Pledge now to get a copy, and make your Adventure Time loving friends jealous!

And that’s it for this week. Next week I’ll be back to show you around the various crowdfunding campaigns, and maybe show you something you like.
