While it seemed to be rather quiet at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, there was one film that emerged with nigh-universal praise — writer-director Joanna Hogg‘s feature The Souvenir. The ’80s set drama stars Honor Swinton Byrne, Tom Burke, and Tilda Swinton. Honor Swinton Byrne headlines the film as a young film student who winds up ensnared in a whirlwind romance with a charming though mysterious young man (Burke) despite the protests of her mother (played by her real life mother in Tilda Swinton).
The Souvenir took home the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, and it’s been riding a wave of positive buzz that eluded so many films out of Park City this year. A24, who continue to amass goodwill among film lovers, will distribute The Souvenir in America, releasing the film in theaters on May 17, 2019. Check out the first trailer for The Souvenir.
