The Specials Fight Crime Today on Blu-ray!

GameStop, Inc.

Back in 2005 or 2006, our Senior Editor Carl Jansson and I were hanging out at our beloved and deeply missed Comic Universe in Fountain Valley, CA. Carl had motioned The Specials in passing a few times and at that point I had not heard of it.

One day, Carl had a standard DVD copy of The Specials into Comic Universe and we literally forgot everything we were doing to just sit down, sucking in the humor from a then, virtually unknown writer named James Gunn (Minute Man in the film).

I was truly surprised as to how funny this movie was on such a limited budget and reminded that good writing definitely can go a long way.

Fast forward to 2020 and here we are at FanboyNation remembering The Specials. James Gunn is a mega star after writing and directing Guardians of the Galaxy, Jamie Kennedy just released a new stand up special on Tubi and Scott Christian Sava, who was one of the visual effects designers, is about to have his movie Animal Crackers released on Netflix.

We spoke with Gunn about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, we interviewed Kennedy about his comedy special and our friends at the Assyrian Podcast interviewed Sava about Animal Crackers and all the talented people he worked with over on that animated feature.

I mean really, we would have known that 20 years later after The Specials had been released we would still have ties to the first movie to spoof the Superhero genre?

For those that aren’t that familiar with The Specials, the story follows an M level Superhero team Nightbird (Jordan Ladd), The Weevil (Rob Lowe), Amok (Kennedy), U.S. Bill (Mike Schwartz), The Strobe (Thomas Haden Church), Ms. Indestructible (Paget Brewster), Power Chick (Kelly Coffie) and Minute Man (Gunn) as they not only deal with lower level street crime, but trouble among their ranks as one of their own is being recruited to go up to the big league A team run by Verdict (Michael Weatherly), on top of losing out on a lucrative toy deal, all hell breaks lose and from there all hilarity busts loose in this dark comedy.
