Tonight at 7:30 p.m., don’t miss the heartfelt screening of ‘The Paper Bag Plan‘ at The Lot in Fashion Island, part of the 25th Annual Newport Beach Film Festival. Directed by Anthony Lucero (a fellow San Francisco State University alumnus), this film is a poignant exploration of love, struggle, and the enduring bond between a father and son, offering a narrative that resonates with anyone who has faced the challenges of caring for a loved one.
At the center of ‘The Paper Bag Plan‘ is Oscar (Lance Kinsey), a devoted father grappling with the dual burdens of being a high-functioning alcoholic and recently receiving a colon cancer diagnosis. His biggest concern is the future of his disabled son, Billy (Cole Massie). As Oscar faces the grim reality of his mortality, he embarks on a quest to prepare Billy for a life of independence, leading him to a local grocery store where he hopes to secure a bagger job for his son. This premise sets the stage for a touching narrative about parental devotion and the complexities of disability.
Lucero, who previously tackled themes of race and identity in ‘East Side Sushi‘, infuses ‘The Paper Bag Plan‘ with a deeply personal touch. Drawing inspiration from his own family experiences—particularly the love and dedication shown by his mother toward his disabled brother and sister passing away from cancer, the film paints a raw and honest picture of the everyday trials faced by the working-class. Notably, much like his earlier work, ‘The Paper Bag Plan‘ was self-funded by Lucero and his wife, Ke`alohi Lee Lucero, showcasing their commitment to telling stories that matter.
The performances in ‘The Paper Bag Plan‘ are especially noteworthy. Kinsey’s portrayal of Oscar captures a father’s fierce love intermingled with vulnerability, while Massie brings a touching innocence to Billy. Their relationship unfolds in a series of powerful moments that are both heartwarming and heartbreaking. The drive to change Ravi Kapoor as Tom, the store manager’s perception on hiring an employee with a disability. The film deftly balances sorrow with humor, ensuring that while the subject matter is heavy, there are moments of levity that remind us of the joy found in small victories. Just remember to bring a box of tissues.
‘The Paper Bag Plan‘ screens at 7:30 p.m. at The Lot inside Fashion Island in Newport Beach, CA.
