‘The Old Man and the Old Moon,’ is South Coast Repertory’s final summer at Mission San Juan Capistrano ending their tenure with a magical tale of love.
South Coast Repertory (SCR) embarks on its final summer at Mission San Juan Capistrano with ‘The Old Man and the Old Moon,’ a whimsical odyssey crafted by the inventive minds of PigPen Theatre Co. Directed by SCR’s own Kim Martin-Cotten, this outdoor spectacle unfolds under the stars, creating an unforgettable journey through land, sea, and sky in pursuit of love.
Set against the backdrop of Mission San Juan Capistrano’s historic Central Courtyard, the production casts a mesmerizing spell, merging indie-folk melodies with ingenious staging to transform a simple fable into a grand theatrical event under a near full moon. The story follows the Old Man, tasked with replenishing the moon’s light every night, who awakens to find his beloved wife missing, pulled away by a haunting melody. Thus begins his epic quest, brimming with encounters with fantastical characters, facing the fury of an apocalyptic storm, and even venturing into the belly of a colossal fish. Can he locate his wife before darkness envelops the world forever?

Among the SCR veterans gracing the stage are Jess Andrews, known for her incredible performances in ‘Appropriate‘ and ‘The Little Foxes,’ and Tommy Beck, whose magnetic presence illuminated ‘A Christmas Carol.’ Adding to this illustrious lineup is Huntington Beach native Armando Gutierrez, celebrated for his role in ‘Million Dollar Quartet,’ and Matt MacNelly, whose musical expertise as the music director for ‘Cambodian Rock Band‘ resonate deeply within all their performances. Rounding out the ensemble are Joe Ngo and SCR newcomers Alex Lydon and Ana Marcu, injecting fresh talent and vitality into ”The Old Man and the Old Moon.’
These syncretistic motley misfits of merry melody making musicians embody the true definition of the word, “thespian.” Each had the ability of a equilibrist as every artist tightly balanced shifting between characters and instruments throughout the performance. Behind my level of comprehension, Gutierrez was able to make the recorder a respectable instrument, something that was inconceivable past elementary school. Marcu and Lydon played nine instruments between the two of them including an accordion.
