The Minister of Chance: An Audio Drama too Good to Keep Quiet

GameStop, Inc.

The Minister of ChanceA clever politician maneuvers his way into conquering a kingdom. A cynical general watches his actions. The conquered people prepare to rebel. A young woman gets caught in the crossfire. That’s already plenty for any story. Then consider: Someone is moving the stars, and the man hunting him has almost no idea where to look or how to ask for help.

Throw in some top-notch acting, a superb set of sound effects, and you have the audio drama, The Minister of Chance. Oh, and it’s free to download. The last segment went up this time last year, so it’s all there, just waiting.

The first thing this Doctor Who and Blake’s 7 fan noticed was the cast. Take a look: Julian Wadham, Jenny Agutter, Jed Brophy, Lauren Crace, Paul Darrow, Philip Glenister, Beth Goddard, Tamsin Greig, Peter Guinness, Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann, and Tim McInnerny. Also, Sophie Aldred makes a guest appearance. That’s two former Doctors, one companion, and Avon right there. And, it is a pleasure to hear them again (though this site’s Lady Victoria says I should warn you about the first jolt on hearing the Doctor swear), and the whole cast is good—very, very good.

I quickly got caught up in the story past that and the characters. There’s Durian, a positively loathsome but very clever and charming politician who knows how to get his way; Kitty, a young foundling who is not going to sit tamely by while a stranger investigates odd happenings; Professor Cantha, a pacifist who finds herself the figurehead for a rebellion; the Minister of Chance, a detective who has a hard time locating his quarry in part because he is not human and does not understand humans or catch their cues; and numerous other characters, each taking a turn in the spotlight.

There is also plenty going on as the two stories, that of the conquest and of the hunt, parallel each other and cross over at different moments, and as the Minister and Kitty travel between worlds and meet various beings, get themselves into and out of trouble, and try to find out who is behind the bigger problem with the stars.

The Minister of Chance is worth listening to more than once. The audio values are amazing; the team has worked to add a host of background noises and to convey distance, direction, and action via sound. Very rarely, I found myself rewinding to catch someone’s voice when they were far away, but by and large, the sound balance was good.
I did mention it was free, right? Go and listen for yourself, then let me know what you think. More importantly, let everyone else know. They’re advertising by word of mouth, and some things are just too good to be kept quiet.
