Off-Broadway comes to North Orange County with ‘The Marvelous Wonderettes‘ at The Phantom Projects Theatre at La Habra Depot.
The smash Off-Broadway hit ‘The Marvelous Wonderettes‘ transforms The Phantom Projects Theatre at La Habra Depot into Springfield High School’ 1958 prom night, where we meet Betty Jean (Dara Adedara), Cindy Lou (Zoe-Raven), Missy (Keira Weiss), 
and Suzy (Kaya Carr), four girls with dreams as big as their crinoline skirts! The show takes us on an emotional rollercoaster of infidelity, betrayal and broken friendships, all through the power of song as they serenade us with classic ’50s hits like ‘Lollipop‘, ‘Dream Lover‘, ‘Stupid Cupid‘ and ‘Lipstick on Your Collar‘.
In Act II, the Wonderettes reunite for their 10-year reunion, reflecting on the highs and lows of the past decade. Despite life’s challenges, they demonstrate the power of forgiveness while reconnecting with old friends and resilience. Featuring over 30 classic ’50s and ’60s hits, ‘The Marvelous Wonderettes‘ will have everyone smiling and humming along to the golden oldies of yesteryear.
The cast’s interaction and harmonies were incredible, making audience members believe that they were an organic girl group instead of perfectly cast for the stage. I am actually upset with myself for not catching all the foreshadowing through the dialogue that moved the narrative along leading to the classic toe-tapping tunes. Writer and creator Roger Bean’s musical has kept audiences singing along for nearly a quarter-century and it’s no wonder why the ‘The Marvelous Wonderettes‘ is, well…simply marvelous.
Miguel Cardenas’ direction and choreography brilliantly captured diva rivalries while somehow maintaining unity. Zoe Wilber and Sherry Domerego’s costuming transported us to a time when fashion and music went hand-in-hand. Gabrielle Maldonado’s musical direction made these women feel like an authentic girl group that should go on tour.
The Phantom Projects Theatre, a hidden gem in North Orange County with a capacity of around 140, is partnered with La Mirada Theatre and is poised to make a significant impact in the theater community.
