Star Wars is coming to television as part of Disney’s upcoming streaming service Disney+. The Mandalorian will be the first ever live action Star Wars series, and today brings some casting news for what will be one of the most highly anticipated series ever. Narcos and Kingsman: The Golden Circle‘s Pedro Pascal will be the eponymous Mandalorian, who, just so we’re clear, is not Boba Fett.
Joining Pascal in the cast is an impressive roster of stars, including former MMA fighter Gina Carano, Gus Fring himself Giancarlo Esposito, Emily Swallow, action legend Carl Weathers, and Omid Abtahi. Then there are two shocking cast members, the great director and actor Werner Herzog, who might inject a bit of existential philosophizing to that galaxy far, far away. Rounding out the cast is the legendary Nick Nolte, who is likely to bring a grizzled, boozy sense to the scum and villainy surrounding The Mandalorian.
Jon Favreau will be executive producing and writing the series along with veteran Star Wars writer Dave Filoni directing the first episode. Other directors slated to helm episodes of The Mandalorian include Bryce Dallas Howard, Rick Famuyiwa, Doborah Chow, and Thor: Ragnarok‘s Taika Waititi. That’s a hell of a lineup, though it’s the involvement of Taika Waititi who generates the most excitement for me.
The Mandalorian is going to be a huge event and is already generating interest in Disney+ well before it launches in 2019. The show is currently in production and there’s no premiere date set as of yet. But look to the horizon because something big is coming.
