A few years ago, the directing duo of Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz created a terrifying look at a fractured family unit with the horror of Goodnight Mommy. Now the two directors return with their latest exercise in terror with another family full of distrust with the impending terror of The Lodge, which had its critically acclaimed debut at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Today Neon has released the first trailer for The Lodge and this is looking to be one of the year’s freakiest films.
Richard (Richard Armitage) is a single father who just recently started dating Grace (Riley Keough). The patriarch of this family has just told his two children, Aidan (Jaeden Martell) and Mia (Lia McHugh), that he plans to marry Grace. So to build trust between his children and their soon-to-be stepmom, the family travels to their secluded cabin in the woods where nothing could possibly go wrong. Deep in the snowy seclusion lies an array of deeply buried secrets about Grace’s past, creating further uncertainty for the kids and their future stepmom.
If there are any lessons to be learned from Goodnight Mommy, it’s that Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz aren’t interested in conventional twists, and any assumptions you may have about The Lodge should be dismissed before the film starts. There’s going to be a real chill in the air when Neon releases The Lodge into theaters everywhere this fall.
The official synopsis for The Lodge:
A bone-chilling nightmare from the directors of Goodnight Mommy, The Lodge begins with a fractured family as Richard (Richard Armitage) tells his children, Aidan (It’s Jaden Martell) and Mia (Lia McHugh), of his intent to marry his new girlfriend, Grace (Riley Keough).
In an effort to bond, the family retreat to their remote winter cabin. However, when Richard is forced to abruptly depart for work he leaves the children in Grace’s care. Isolated and alone, a blizzard traps them inside the lodge and terrifying events summon specters from Grace’s past.
As nerves fray and tensions rise, Grace, Aidan, and Mia have to fight for deliverance against unseen forces of evil.
