I’m not gonna say it. I’ll leave it for every other film writer to introduce the latest trailer for the remake of Poltergeist with, “They’re heeere!” Well, I guess it found its way in there anyways. As much as I’d like to tear down this new trailer for being just another lazy remake, I can’t bring myself to it because, at least according to the trailer, it looks far more promising than I could’ve possibly expected. It also doesn’t hurt that it’s well-cast, with Sam Rockwell, Rosemarie DeWitt, and Jared Harris occupying the lead roles. The remake is produced by horror legend Sam Raimi, though he does have a shoddy track record in producing horror remakes, and is directed by Gil Kenan of Monster House and City of Ember fame.
If Poltergeist turns out to be a lackluster remake, it still might not be the worst possible side effect of the remake. If the curse of the Poltergeist movies is reborn and claims Sam Rockwell, there’s no forgiving this project. Here’s hoping Mr. Rockwell is safe well past the film’s May 22nd release date.
Here’s the official synopsis:
Legendary filmmaker Sam Raimi (“Spiderman,” “Evil Dead”, “The Grudge”) and director Gil Kenan (“Monster House”) contemporize the classic tale about a family whose suburban home is haunted by evil forces. When the terrifying apparitions escalate their attacks and hold the youngest daughter captive, the family must come together to rescue her before she disappears forever.
