Matthew Postlethwaite’s The Great Artist Screens Tonight during the Newport Beach Film Festival – Short Narrative at 6:15 p.m. at Starlight Triangle Cinemas in Costa Mesa, CA.
In an almost Dorian Grey style presentation, writer and star, Matthew Postlethwaite’s The Great Artist reflects on the sacrifices one makes to create world class art while suffering and hiding mental illness from the greater community he has engulfed himself within.
What was most surprising about The Great Artist is how a 23-minute short film felt like a big budget production that was leading to a 95-minute full length feature, and hopefully that’s the plan for the future. The one thing I constantly about short films and why I typically don’t like them is that, “If they are good, you are upset because it ended so quickly and if they are bad 8 minutes feels like 8 hours.” The thing with the The Great Artist is that is absolutely the prior in that I was left wanting another hour to explore the depths of Postlethwaite’s character and his decline.
Prior to The Great Artist I had little understanding of Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) and although this is not a deep dive into the DSM in understanding DID, The Great Artist cracks open the window on the top and the need of removing the stigma regarding mental health.
Director Indrani Pal-Chaudhuri takes on a ride that almost made me feel I was camera witnessing the story unfold instead of being the viewing audience sitting back trying to predict what will happen next.
As much as I detest highfalutin societies from when I was in academia and now into the arts, Matthew Postlethwaite’s The Great Artist allows us to see what can happen when you have to live a double life in a world where image more important the art.
